FanMod :D "Oddworld : Fist of Odd"

Hi guys,

This is my first post, cant believe I havent found you guys before this.

I Adore the oddworld and was stumped when i heard the game series had ended

But.

Im tryin to keep the dream alive by creating an Oddworld mod with the Unreal Tournament 3 Engine which provides beautiful visuals and rendering functions, perfect for glorifying and prolonging the Oddworld experience.

The mod itself and its functionality is debatable at this stage in development, I have only started to model the biped of 'Munch' today, but Idea's need to be drawn. The name so far is "Oddworld : Fist of Odd" which gives the inclination of 'war' and 'conflict', which it doesnt have to be. I would love if you guys came up with some ideas of how this could go down, e.g A Native vs Industrial mulitplayer shooter (machine guns, spooce bows, tomohawk clubs, some custom fanmade weapons'. It could also possibly be another Single player saga to the story. I would love to hear your thoughts.

um... there is probably more I have to say but im rather tired as of now, so I'll leave you with some of my previous 3D works to show im not all talk and no walk.

An interesting idea. I can't wait to see the rest. I'd help if I knew anything about it. But I think I've only played Unreal Tournament once. xD

You might've halved your posts though, introducing yourself in another thread and posting the artwork in this one. Any non-Oddworld creations go in the thread that is well, not Oddworld.

Ahhh terribly sorry. I sort of posted in context to what I had previously written and thus, ended up with the pictures just to show I wasnt a lost cause to others who are skilled 3D artists and to not put them off from contributing :P

Ha ha, I cant work 'source' unfortunately , but i seriously recommend investing in UT3 as it has a beautiful rendering system alongside performance compremises(normal/specular mapping). Everything in UT3 engine just looks georgeous in my opinion .

Hey Malloy, glad you got on here. This sounds like a very interesting project, and you certainly sound like you could make it something great. I’m not a talented artist or modeller, nor do I have a computer that could play or test the mod, but if you need ideas for units/interactions/weapons/etc I’m sure I can produce a few. I hope it turns into something great.

And given the context, your models are fine in this thread.

Thanks man, Ahh UT3's cheap and doesnt require that much top end hardware to run .

Ideas!, yes I need a limitless source of ideas for this project and where better else but at a community that loves this universe as much as I do.

First before content is discussed 'weapons, vehicles (Elum :P), environments and what not' we need to agree on what gameplay this mod will have.

basically, Multiplayer Oddworld shooter, 4 player co-op Campaign (Abe, Munch, two randoms :P) Single Player Campaign, Multiplayer strategy shooter (birdseye view intervention) could be anything really, thats why I need ideas

go mental. but ultimately a genre will have to be decided and I hope it is one that the community can enjoy. (If they can get UT3 :P,)

I think the Industrialist vs. Native scenario could make for a Team Fortress-esque type game, but there might not be enough different types of units to warrent that, still, my two cents.

3Dstudio Max, Zbrush, Mudbox, Photoshop and xNormals. The UT3 engine is the same engine as Gears of War and is pretty much capable of everything, a Total conversion infact. Here's an example of the UT3 engine looking pretty.

1) Camera Angle ?
2) Multiplayer (fighting online/co-op) ?
3) Weapons, Vehicles, Powerups
4) Morphs (Yes i want Munch having a morph, I saw an awsome concept fo a Munch Morph and was pissed to find it wasnt in MO) (Abe's = the wilderness god spirit ugly thing)
5) Character list (Munch + Abe = essential, who else is gonna be in this mod, Sligs, Slogs, Glukkons) ?
6) Other such things (Should Munch hop around for travel or be in trusty wheelchair?, Shall I give the bipeds permutations e.g sunglasses, different hairstyles blah blah blah?)

-- I think it should be controlled to an extent. In some scenes, such as in MO, perhaps the camera is in a fixed position. I'm just guessing.

2) Multiplayer (fighting online/co-op) ?
-- Perhaps eventually it should have online access. Or maybe you can do the whole WII thing and do that wi-fi thing. I don't even know what that is. xD

3) Weapons, Vehicles, Powerups
-- Get the Oddworld art book if you can. It's chock full of awesome concepts of each of these! I also recommend Stranger's Wrath. Or... (The Oddworld Graphics Gallery has this too.)

-- You mean Roid(Munch) and Shrykull(abe)? Well, perhaps these can only be obtained once they reach a certain level or if they max out.. uh, somethin'. Or in Munch's case, when he gets mad enough. XD Maybe he could have a "rage" meter. For Abe, perhaps he can increase his "spiritual power" (like the rage meter, just named differently) by collecting something, or saving souls.

5) Character list (Munch + Abe = essential, who else is gonna be in this mod, Sligs, Slogs, Glukkons) ?
-- My suggestions would be the first four, although find a way to made it uh, mod-able? I dunno the word. But so people can create their own creatures and stick 'em up for download or something. Or share it amongst themselves. XD So if someone wanted a pet sleg, they could modify it from the slog. I dunno how "legal" that is, but I've seen huge sites like it.

-- Think MO. If he can find a wheelchair, yay! If he can't, he needs to either stick to water or he'll be shot. For your second option, perhaps create a customizing area, and you can stick in hair, different clothing, loin cloths. Maybe once you access/beat certain levels more will be opened up.

These are my suggestions. I'm not to knowledgeable on mods or many 3D games, but I tried to offer what I would "want" as a player of this game. I hope I helped.

Yeh thanks, loads of other people should too.

relating to #2 though, The game itself (Unreal Tournament 3) is multiplayer already, and servers can go upto 36, so 18 vs 18. But thats only for Mulitplayer. Not campaign.

You can do co-op campaign (story mode) but only upto 4 players.

So the compremise is Multiplayer, loads of players, get to shoot friends with loads of mudokens and Sligs. Campaign (story mode) 4 player co-op, have Abe, Munch and two other 'hero' characters, or even just have the 3rd and 4th player helpful co-mudokens, in a story with loads of possibilities and characters.

Oh yeh and #1 the camera angle. pretty much 3rd person, first person or side view? (side view would be lame although would be sticking to Oddworlds roots)

I say first or Third Person since using side-scrolling would kind of waste the engines potential, but I don't know what kind of mod this would be, so I can't really vote completely on first or third person

1) Camera Angle ?
Like others have said, side view seems a bit too limiting and unimpressive. Whether it’s first or third depends both on what the gameplay is and on the quality of the models’ animation. Not to sound mean or assume you can’t do quality work, but it can be very annoying when you have to keep looking at the same dodgy movements all through a game.

3) Weapons, Vehicles, Powerups
I don't know if the engine is capable of having different weapon sets for different characters/teams, but:
Native weapons: Slingshots, Tomahawks, SpooceBows, Live Ammo crossbow
Industrial weapons: Blunderbuss, Big Whammy, SnUzi, BlitzPacker, LungBuster

Native Vehicles: Elum, Wheelchair for Munch, Meetles
Industrial Vehicles: Slig Tanks, Shock Tanks, Recyclers

Powerups: Vendos (For health, speed, higher jumping, invisibility), Spooce

4) Morphs (Yes i want Munch having a morph, I saw an awsome concept fo a Munch Morph and was pissed to find it wasnt in MO) (Abe's = the wilderness god spirit ugly thing)
Sounds good. As an equivalent you could have Sligs turning into Big Bros.

5) Character list (Munch + Abe = essential, who else is gonna be in this mod, Sligs, Slogs, Glukkons) ?
There are a whole host of industrial (Wolvarks, Interns, Vykkers) and native (Grubbs, Steef, Scuba Toads) characters (as well as Clakkerz and Outlaws), but it seems to me that controllable characters have to be able to fight. This rules out Glukkons. And if players control Slogs, would they be given some kind of weaponry?

6) Other such things (Should Munch hop around for travel or be in trusty wheelchair?, Shall I give the bipeds permutations e.g sunglasses, different hairstyles blah blah blah?)
Subtly different skin tones for everyone, different native hairstyles for Mudokons, maybe different headgear machines to help differentiate Gabbits. Sligs can have different kinds of pants, masks, and accessories.

It would help to know what the engine is capable of? Water play? Melee as well as shooting? Flying vehicles? Do you know of any particularly good resources for reading about such things for a mod noob like me? =P

Yeh those are good ideas, i take it you want a multiplayer brawl mod going on then

Industrial vs Native.

All of the above mentioned is possible, just requires alot of coding.

I'll get some screenshots of the environments which are default to the game to show off its graphical abilities.

Well, what if Gluks had their own "powerup" of sorts, and use mech suits of some kind. I dunno. Just throwing stuff out.

My thoughts.
1. Camera should be something like third person normally, but first person for things like sniper rifles.
2. I think a multiplayer only game would be awesome. Single-player campaign would be a nice addition but multiplayer would be cooler.
3. For industrialists there should be weapons like the Blitzpacker, Lungbuster, Shot Doc, Shock Rocker, grenades, the armour from MO, and all the vehicles that Max said. For natives there should be Spoocebows, Tomohawks, slingshots, spirit ring stones (grenades), Crossbows, spiritual armour, and again all the vehicles Max said. As for powerups, what Max said.
4. Yes.
5. Can't really say anything new.
6. Munch should be able to go about in his wheelchair.

Customizeable charactors would be great. Different headresses, skin tone, slig pants, slig visor colors, glukkon suit styles and colors, vykker accesories like the Cyclops treatment, tattoos, eye color, and stuff like that would be fun to mess around with.

I think Munch's wheelchair could be cool but might not be needed. To expand on vehicles I would also suggest Mugs (the pointy Meetle things used by Sligs), Snoozers, Blimps or Vykker Pods, and perhaps, while not a vehicle, a form of "turret" such as Zap Henges or Storm Circles for Mudokons.

I'd rather we limit the fanmade original content, so I wouldn't want to see Mecha-Glukkkons. Perhaps have them as a non playable "rally point" type of feature, like how in Unreal Tournament there were the different Nodes in Onslaught mode perhaps a similar mode featuring factories/villages or, if that is too large scale, Glukkons and Shamans could be used?

If Scrabs and Paramites could be used in some form it would also be neat.

For species I'd suggest:
Native: Mudokon, Grubb, Steef, Gabbit, Scubatoad. Perhaps even Kintos.
Industrial: Intern, Slig, Vykker, Wolvark, possibly Outlaw or maybe even 1%r.

For weapons:
Native: Spoocebow, slingshot, Tomahawk, Spear (as seen in some of the Scubatoad/Elum rider pics, and an FMV video I saw somewhere), Live Ammo, perhaps also Fuzzles as the equivalent of a grenade, only minus the exploding.

Industrial: Slig rifle, Blitzpacker, Snuzi, Lungbuster, (maybe using the various concepts from the Art Book as upgradeable weapons if possible), Electroshocker, Slig baton, Big Whammy (As far as I recall, that huge double barrelled gun concept from TOGG), grenades.

As for transformations, the MO Slig/Intern/Vykker armour is an idea besides the Roid, Shrykull, Big Bro and Flying Slig options.

I realise I'm suggesting something very large scale and ambitious here. By no means do I expect or realistically hope for all of that, but I think this Mod has a lot of potential regardless and could be very fun.

ha ha Im not digging the Kinto's, they seem out of place.

Do you want the ability for players to pick up any weapon at a time or be confined to a specific weapon/ability like Team Fortress?

Even if you dont want weapons confined to a character class type... I could have it so Industrial players cant pick up Native weapons and visa versa,

That seems the best idea, although there might have to be some limitations. Maybe some weapons can't be taken into water, etc. Maybe you can mount weapons onto the Elum, as they're hard to ride unless they're tacked. Not like Abe, who rode his bareback. xD

I only liked the Steef creature from SW. @ Munch's Master, I think fanmade content will be a good addition as we dont have anything else to go with since other oddworld games arent being developed
