An Elum in Munch's Oddysee last level?

Hiya,
It looks alot like an Elum on the operating table in the final level of Munch's Oddysee; or is it another creature?

I remember that part. It does look a lot like an Elum. But I don't think it is. I think they would be too fast for Vykkers and Interns. But if it is one, how did they catch it?

Max, Elum traps were cancelled from the game, so they were never announced officially real.

So we could instead speculate ideas that have absolutely no bearing on officially released details, that would be better?

Elum traps are fine for this purpose. I wonder how it works? Yet another example of the bizarre and uneven selection of industrialist technology.

I wouldn't have an answer for the Elum trap, as I do not how it even worked in gameplay. Although, I'm pretty such an Elum trap activated straight from when an Elum came underneth it. Perhaps Sligs had the power to deactivate with some mechincal device to turn it off. I would say the traps would be used to make the Elums stay still for either Sligs to capture them into a more portal trap, or to make Elums stay still while a Slig open fires.

Could it also be possible that Abe had to receive the spirit rings to release Elum from the traps?

@Cullen_Heath: So it is safe to assume Mugs, Meetles, Chroniclers, Searexs, etc. do not exist?

No, but it's also not safe to assume that they do.

The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants, p. 26, para. 4:
There is a lovely paragraph here that explains how few character and environment designs are actually used, but the unused ones ‘remain part of the unseen Oddworld Universe’. The Elum trap survived the process of iteration all the way to being in gameplay, which is pretty good going. But yes, it not having been seen in any canonical capacity makes unknown the details of its presence on Oddworld.

Personally, I imagine Elums would actually be caught in the same kind of trap as the bear Scrab trap that nabs Munch. Even as far back as 2001, there were opinions that the Elum trap doesn’t seem very Oddworldy, and I rather agree. Oddworld should limit its sci‐fi qualities.

I agree, too.

Who's to say that they're meant for Scrabs with all of those Paramites and others running around? Obviously they aren't meant for Ratz, but these traps could've been meant for Paramites to run into them. Even in the video, the narrator says "that's a bear trap", but I don't ever remember hearing anything that said that they were meant for Scrabs.

Munch calls it a Scrab trap in his interview with IGN in an apparent attempt by OWI to ignore the mention of bears in the ‘Passport to Oddworld’ feature. But Alf references a ‘Gabbit trap’ in Dear Alf, and since the device was set to catch a Gabbit, maybe that is the most appropriate name of all.

Well, on the subject of catching Elums, how do you suppose they catch them to make Elum Chubs? If there are gabbit traps and scrap traps, what's to stop the industrialists from catching bigger, faster animals? It is their specialty, after all.

I always imagined that the scrabs and paramites for rupturefarms were herded and corraled by gun-toting sligs. Not any high-faluting Vykker technology.

That’s what I’d always imagined, too. Firstly because there are Sligs in Paramonia and Scrabania and their respective temples. Secondly because of this quote:

:
[T]he Forests of Oddworld are a true battleground. Once a remote and peaceful place, now the air is rent by the sound of Slig gunfire and screaming Paramites as they are herded into boxcars for transport to Glukkon slaughterhouses.

I can understand the Paramites being herded, but the Scrabs? Wouldn't they be too powerful for the Sligs?

I'd hgave thought they'd used large nets or something, though that would be somewhat...no.

It's plausible that loud noise making devices of some sort are used, or of a high frequency (assuming that Scrabs, paramites and other such eyeless creatures use echolocation or a similar system to navigate) to corral creatures such as Scrabs into a truck or something to fly them over to RF or wherever they are to be processed by machines.

I'd assumed the trap Munch was caught in was a Scrab trap that had been modified by the Vykkers somehow to attract Gabbits. Doesn't matter if it's too big and hurts the Gabbit or anything, as long as it holds it there.

With honey.

And then they raised them to use their babies for more sick experiments. But that's what I think... though I think, vykkers are not that different from human scientist and what they do...

Lawl.

I don't think they're like human scientists. Vykkers are more widely 'accepted' in Oddworld and aren't thought of as cruel in the same sense as we look at those who experiment on animals for pharmeceutical reasons (but for shampoo or soap? What do they put in it that's dangerous in the first place that needs testing?). Vykkers do it more for their own pleasure in inflicting pain, then just sell stuff on the side to pay for their twisted pastimes. Humans do it to either make money (...that isn't a whole lot more moral, is it?) or to create new medical products.

Depends on the type of scientist you're looking at, normal or twisted, cruel a*shole.

The sadism of Vykkers being more influential on their actions that their lust for Moolah strikes me as a peculiar characterization. I would have thought OWI were most directly referencing the uncaring use of animals to develop the latest consumer goods in humans’ pursuit of profit. I doubt there really are scientists and corporate researchers whose primary motivation is to torture creatures. After all, even animal testing for cosmetics has codes of conduct concerning the welfare of the test subjects.

I can only conclude that, just as Moolah isn’t the primary interest of Vykkers, corporate activity isn’t the underlying target of the Vykkers’ role in the Oddworld shattered‐mirror. That position is filled by the life philosophy of only concerning oneself with oneself and the here‐and‐now. This attitude is not restricted to corporate scientists, and the commentary of cruel experimentation is just a front.

Just like the environmentally, culturally and socially destructive industrial practices of the Glukkons is just a front for the underlying criticism of society’s overly vested interest in economics and finance.

I think the Vykkers are making all their products for the Glukkons, because the Vykkers serve Glukkons!
By the Way, i think that trap Munch fell into was made for him!!!It was singing like a Gabbit to atract Munch!

OK first of all, Vykkers don't serve Glukkons. They both work for Khanzumers, which are the consumers for the Industerial families' services. Now sure, Glukkons and Vykkers might buy each other products, but I'm pretty sure that the majority of the products produced by Vykkers and Glukkons are aimed to be bought by Khanzumers. As you can see, Khanzumers seem to outnumber all the species we have seen. There was a poster that said that Vykkers Conglomrate served over a trillion costumers.

Next, the Gabbit trap was made to attract any remaining Gabbits left. Not just Munch.

I always figured that the Khanzumerz were no specific species, but rather the general Industrialist population who bought the Cartel/Labs' products.

Lulu was simply there because it was a big event held by the Vykkers on their ship. Vykkers don't work for Glukkons and Glukkons don't work for Vykkers.

They are just buisness partners

When a Glukkon becomes a Glockstar, he is invited to work at Vykkers Labs. Obviously, Lulu accepted this offer. Lulu had no intentions of attending the Gabbiar Auction before Abe had his way with him.
