I just... didn't make it.

Yeah.. I didn't pass the qualifying examination of the art school. Wow, I so screwed up!
Today, I got a letter from them and they told me that they only can take the best candidates for the coming year. The best possible scores were 50. And you know what? I got 8.

Nooooo! Aw, Judith, I'm so sorry! They gave you the wrong score, the schmucks! You deserve thousands of points, they marked you wrong!
Are there any other schools for you to go to? I'm sure some of them'll let you in.

Well I'm afraid, in those parts there are not. But I don't give up now because art and drawing was always my life and a comfort in bad times of mine too.
This summer I'll try to make an exchange for one year in America (which I actually have planned to make last year, but it has not worked yet either) to learn English and to look for art schools in those parts.
Now I only have to find out a place or family for me to be there. Maybe my parents have connections but I'm not sure.

Man, there're truly sick people out there.

Well, I hope everything goes well for you if you do manage to go to America, I know you will, because I've seen your art, and it's some of the best I've ever seen in my life. You'll go far, Judith. You really will!

Another example of why point-based school 'recruiting' is unfair. You can't decide what a person is capable of by a pair of numbers.

They've only seen a couple of your drawings, based on a set topic (if I remember right). It's impossible to judge true talent just by that. Don't let yourself down because of this. And if you're thinking about America, why not try England too? I liked it when I went there last year and before that (I didn't go to any of the schools though).

Sorry to hear that, really. Just suck it up though, and keep trying.

Hell, take a look at me, I haven't passed a single exam in over 4 months time. It's quite remarkable I haven't been kicked out. Yet. But I'm still kicking, I suggest you do the same.

I'm sorry to hear that....But still keep trying, and improve your art techniques. Just be open to a lot of stuff! The scoring must be pretty tough I assume. I'm also just curious, could you please tell me what the qualifying exam was?

What exactly did the exam consist of?

It was:

1. Drawing the lines of some paper bags (they were handed out).
2. Taking a part of the bag and shade it on the drawing.
3. Cut the paper bag in 3 till 5 pieces, put them together to an "interesting pose" and draw that too.
4. They showed us a picture of a bridge and we had to draw 6 pictures about the ideas with which we could come up when we saw it. Two of them had to be colored. (I guess, on this job I really wasn't good enough because bridges were not that inspiring for me. I don't even know any stories about bridges.)

That all took about 8 hours.

Well, bridges are still better than paper bags, in my opinion. This 'paper bag' idea is new to me, sounds interesting. Though, it must have been boring, fiddling with some bags and drawing them for hours.

I wouldn't have got too many ideas on the bridge either. Maybe drawing a miniature Golden Gate in a countryside, or soldiers blowing up a bridge under some Tiger tanks, or trolls living under some bridge (memories from the Heroes series...). That's all I can think of for now.

Wow, that's a bitch and a half... I'm sorry.

But in all honesty, art schools aren't all they're cracked up to be. Since mid-junior year up until a few months ago, I've been looking at nothing but art colleges. And there are some really cool ones, no doubt about it, but what I've come to realize after looking at a multitude of schools is that they aren't much more than any college art course with a well-recognized name stamped on top of it. You can learn everything you need to draw at a normal university. What really matters is an artist's creativity and commitment to the subject. If you have that stuff, no lousy art school can keep you from making pretty pictures for a living.

Not sure about this. I had a closer look at that art school before and noticed that they really teach the students useful stuff like animation, professional drawing, coloring, modelling, photography... just everything. You're surely right that the most schools have just well-recognized names. But concerning this school, I doubt it.

That's very screwed up. Maybe, perhaps, you profession in something else artistic; an artist doesn't have to be perfect at every art skill, I'm sure you have a great skill of your own! ^_^

And they want you to draw paper bags... What's with the tech-stuff? At least they should have given tasks of drawing and shadowing in PhotoShop or something...
