Great Forest Descriptions [extended - Wildlife Descriptions included]

The Great Forest
This huge expanse of forest covers roughly the whole Southern end of Mudos, and may extend onto other continents. Almost entirely unexplored, there is very little known about it. What is known about it is that for almost all of its area the trees are so tall that absolutely no light reaches the ground. This is no real problem for the forest creatures, since most of them live in the various layers of branches. The trees are so huge that some of the branches can be hundreds of metres across.
The Canopy Layer is where most of the 'normal' creatures live. Here you will find Birds, various rodent-type creatures, and lots on arthropod things of various sizes.
Below that is the main expanse of tree. Since the trees can grow to over 2-3 kilometres tall, this covers a huge range of habitats, since the light levels decrease and the humidity increases as you go down. A general 'rule of thumb' is that the further you go down, the 'weirder' the wildlife. In the upper reaches, where there is still a lot of light, there is a proliferation of life in all shapes and sizes. It is here that you may find Nokkim [q.v.] colonies, or Klarm [q.v.] infestations. Whereas the larger animals of Oddworld might have problems with support on the [comparatively] thin branches of the Canopy, about a hundred metres below that the branches are so thick that there is very little that couldn't stand on them. Or so you'd think, until you travelled further down...
The middle branches, which are the widest, hold the largest of the Tree-living creatures [the Ground-living creatures don't bear thinking about], such as the hulking Branthis [q.v.]. It is here that most of the Forest Mudokons [q.v.] build their villages.
The Lower Branches recieve next to no light. Creatures here must rely on other senses, primarily Hearing and Smell. The Kitu [q.v.] are a perfect example of the way these animals make use of alternate senses.
Then we reach Ground Level. Here is is Pitch Black. There is no undergrowth, as plants need light to survive. The closest thing to plant life down here is Fungus, and it grows huge. There are fungal growths the size of small villages. They would coat the forest floor [indeed, it has been speculated that they do, and that soil has simply deposited on top of them again] if it weren't for the huge Bracks [q.v.], which keep it under control.
The forest is rarely entered by outsiders, much less Industrials, and many rumours and fairy tales have grown up around it. What I have just told you, however, is the Truth.

Nokkims
Nokkims are Arthropods, who bear a passing relation to Paramites. The chief difference is that they are Vegetarian. Physically, they resemble Paramites in most respects, but the Feeding Tentacles are different. Nokkim tentacles hang downward, in a manner reminiscent of those of Sligs. Two of the tentacles are extended to roughly the length of the forelegs, and hardened with thick layers of keratin. Their purpose is to scratch away the thick bark of the great trees, to get at the soft, edible pulp within. When not in use, these extended ‘fangs’ are kept folded along the underside of the body.
Nokkims are sociable creatures, which live in colonies inside the branches of the great trees. Since the outer bark can be several metres thick, this is the only practical way to get at the edible inner pulp, and, because the trees are so huge, the Nokkims cause no real damage.
Despite their apparent peacefulness, however, Nokkims will attack en masse anything that they perceive as a threat. For this reason, when among Nokkims, it is crucial that you remain as quiet and still as possible. Their natural predators include Klarm [q.v.] Spores, Branthis [q.v.], and Forest Mudokons [q.v.].

Klarms
There are two distinct stages to Klarm life. The first stage is sedentary, as an anemone-like growth on the branches of the trees. In this stage, they lure other forest creatures to them using [often luminous] lures, then ensnare them with their many tendrils. After they have fed enough, these creatures pupate, emerging in their adult form.
Their Adult Form is vaguely scorpion-like, although the legs are all but vestigial, so movement is minimal. The ‘tail’ is designed to throw its spore-like eggs as far from the adult creature as possible, where they grow into Phase 1 Klarms.
Since Klarms hardly move from the spot they are thrown into, they tend to gather into large infestations which, although they cause no damage to the host tree, stifle the rest of the local wildlife, resulting in patches of trees being almost totally inhabited by Klarms. Fortunately, the Branthis [q.v.] quite successfully keep Klarm populations under control.
The Adult Klarms pose no real danger to explorers, but the sedentary Phase 1 Klarms can ensnare unwary travellers.

Branthis
These hulking Ape-like creatures live in a wide range of levels in the forest, but mainly in the upper-middle regions. They are approximately three metres tall, and half that wide. While not particularly intelligent, Branthis have enough brute strength to make short work of anything that might attack them, meaning that they have few natural Predators, save for the ubiquitous Kikkits [q.v.], although Phase 1 Klarms [q.v.] occasionally succeed in ensnaring them, and Forest Mudokons [q.v.] will kill any that wander near to their villages.
Branthis’ prey varies on each level of the forest. Near the upper reaches, they feed mainly on Nokkims [q.v.] and Klarms, whereas unwary Mudokons make up a large proportion of their diet in the lower reaches, along with the occasional Kitu [q.v.].

Coming Soon: Forest Mudokons, Kitu, Bracks, and Kikkits!

Nice work there, describing a place and all its inhabitants is hard work.

As promised...

***

Forest Mudokons
Around the middle levels of the Great Forest, there might be found large villages among the wide branches. Most buildings are built on top of the branches, although many are hollowed out inside the branches themselves. This is the realm of the Forest Mudokons. Shorter in stature than plains mudokons, they have dappled brown-green skin to aid in camouflage among the dimly-lit leaves of the great trees.
Socially, Forest society is very similar to that of the Plains – a single breeding pair [usually found in a hollowed-out breeding chamber within the branches, or possibly even inside the trunk itself] produce all of the children, which are then brought up by the sterile workers of the village. There is a Caste System of sorts, as children will generally be brought up to perform the same duties as those who brought them up, but it is not rigid; it is possible, and not at all rare, to change your position totally, such as from being a Carpenter to being a Warrior.
Their diet is a varied one. Foragers find fruits and other edible fauna among the branches [Note: The Great Trees do produce fruits, but they can take years to mature before they are ripe, at which point they can be several metres across. When a fruit like this does fall, it can cause disaster in any mudokon villages unfortunate enough to be positioned below… Fortunately, the probability of this is rare. As a result of the amount of time the fruits can take to mature, and of their size, the mudokons do not generally eat the fruits of the Great Trees. The fruits they forage for are the fruits of smaller plants, which grow on the branches of the Great Trees, and exist Commensally with their giant hosts.], while Hunters kill unwary Nokkims [q.v] and Kitu [q.v.]. They are also able to grow some crops on the branches, as the forest provides plenty of organic debris that can be used as effective compost. They have been known to herd Nokkims, but this is rare, as meat production is less efficient and less nutritious than crop production.
Life, however, is not easy, and there are lots of dangers for the unwary. Branthis [q.v.] will eat Mudokons every chance they get, and swarms of Kikkits [q.v.] can pass through villages, decimating crops and picking the flesh from the bones of any mudokons they find in the huts. The danger of falling from the trees is negligible above the age of 1, since children learn to be careful near the edges, and develop the reflexes to catch themselves.
With all these dangers, the mudokons tend to live fast and die young.

Kitu
The Kitu are a perfect example of how nature adapts to the absence of light. These neurotic creatures have vestigial eyes, but they no longer have the ability to see. Instead, their ears have developed to act as the primary sense. Their noses produce a continual stream of clicks, not unlike those of bats, that act as a kind of radar for them to find their way around.
Kitu are primarily vegetarian and insectivorous, feeding on moulds and lichens on the branches, as well as the insects that share that diet. Continually poised for flight, the Kitu’s long, slender, muscular limbs can hang on to almost any surface. Their sensitive ears alert them to any nearby movement. Sudden sounds or movements of any kind will send them to flight off up the trunks and branches to a safer spot. Their ears can fall flat against their skulls to make them more streamlined. This is their main weakness, as their hearing is not as good whilst this is happening, making flight fairly blind, and operating mainly on instinct and a good sense of the space around them. This could make them easy prey to a small group of experienced Mudokon [q.v.] hunters, who could drive Kitu towards each other. Fortunately for the Kitu, the mudokons tend to live considerably higher in the trees than the Kitu, and are generally unused to the extreme darkness in which their intended prey live, so the mudokons tend to stick to other higher-living creatures. As a result, the Kitu have no regular predators, and their numbers are kept down mainly by their fairly short lifespans.

Kikkits
Never more than two inches long, these insects do not seem very threatening, but they are one of the Great Forest’s more dangerous predators. Their bite is extremely poisonous – one bite [in the right place, such as in the eyes or an exposed wound] can bring down even the gigantic Bracks [q.v.], if the Kikkit is lucky.
For most of the time, Kikkits are solitary, and live in the lower levels of the trees, where they feed on almost literally anything [a single Brack corpse can provide a food supply for billions of Kikkits for years, and the fungal growth on the forest floor provides a literally unlimited supply of food]. However, once a year, in the breeding season, the Kikkits gather into huge swarms. These swarms can sometimes rise up through the trees, stripping their path bare of anything vaguely edible. Mudokon [q.v.] crops are devastated; animals that do not flee or hide are stripped of all flesh and left as totally clean skeletons. In Forest terms, this is as devastating a natural disaster as the falling of one of the Great Trees. Fortunately for just about everything, Kikkit swarms do not embark on these upward voyages often.

Bracks
Strangers to the Forest would find it extremely hard to believe the scale of life here. Apart from the trees kilometres high, with branches up to a hundred meters thick, there are also the Bracks. These huge creatures can grow up to three hundred metres long, and fifty wide. They resemble maggots from a distance, but are in fact vertebrate, simply with many stumpy legs and an extremely fat body. They feed on the huge fungi that grow on the forest floor, and have no natural predators except for the occasional lucky Kikkit [q.v.]. Nothing is known about their breeding, and the possibility of a Brack Queen hardly bears thinking about, since the ordinary Bracks are bigger and fatter than the queens of most species.

Wow Rettick, no I thought that it was really info from Oddworld Inhabitants. I was thinking that you got it from Max's powerpoint download (which won't work for me)in the other topic. Anyways, you did a great job creating all this stuff Rettick, keep it up!

I was just thinking that those ideas are really good.

It would be excellent to have Forest Mudokons in Oddworld: Rex's Oddysee, yes nothing has happened as of yet. This is because i have been madly updating Oddworld Universe and the Oddball Inhabitants websites.

I hope that in about 2 days or more, once i have the 'Big Suprise' unvailed i will get back to it.

By the way the 'Big Suprise' is not really a big suprise....hehe

As I told you before, your description of the great forest is awesome, and now with the addition of the creatures, it became even better. That was great Rettick! I spent about 15 minutes trying to imagine the apocalyptical devastation caused by an old, dead, two miles long, huge falling tree. The kikkits swarm also made me visualize creppy scenes of a dark cloud of death going up among the trees, killing everything in its path. The brack creature creature is the ultimate proof of that "rule of thumb" you mentioned (the further you go down, the 'weirder' the wildlife).

YOu should expand on this, and write a tale about the Great Forest.

Well, Undercover Operations is partly set in the Great Forest, but doesn't go into much depth [hah!] on it. Maybe I will write a fic about it, although I already have two fics on the go... :S

Alcar, I just realised that the Great Forest would also be a good environment to have if Rex was a Samdokon, what with the Darkness and all. I know you aren't too keen on that idea, but I think it would be pretty cool...

Edit: To be honest, I enjoy creating things more than writing about them. Maybe I'll just stick to writing descriptions of the Forest, rather than writing a fic about it. After all, writing a fic around a location is not generally a good way to go...

Edit 2: Maybe I'll think of another environment and describe that next...

Edit 3: Maybe I could write some short stories on this... Larry Niven wrote a lot of short stories when developing his "Known Space" Universe...

To be honest, I wasn't really doing this for Rex's Oddysee [although I'd be chuffed if it was used]. I got the impression that Alcar was getting pissed off with all the areas, which was why I posted this separately...

Anyway, here's a picture. Before you see it, I ought to explain it: Alector originally drew it as a picture of a Samdokon, but [being my critical self] I didn't really think it looked right, it looked a bit too animal. But today I realised that it is almost perfect as a Kitu. Just imagine that the hind legs are more slender and suitable for running, like the front ones...

Well thankyou Rettick, and yes your judgement was correct. Too many new areas were being created, the storyline hasn't even been done!

Anyway i don't have any time to work on it now, i've too busy with the HUGE updates on my website, and this new top secret project im working on... oops, its top secret, you didn't even hear me say "top secret", it was a figment of your imagination!
