First movies then games!

I dunno if anybody read this article but it really explanes Lorne's actions into new media and is quite interesting.

The idea is to make a movie first and then have the game be produced and released upon the opening of the film or blockbuster.

Read this article and discuss what you think of this approach.

http://www.g4tv.com/attackoftheshow/...e_Lanning.html

It makes a lot of sense to spend only 35 to 40 million dollars as opposed to 150 million and end up not getting the results you want ya know? So for now on Oddworld will be produced like so, first a release of a movie, then comes the release of a game upon the release of the movie which as we all know will be produce from other parties. interesting but smart approach if you ask me.

Well, of course it makes sense to market a game off the back of a movie. It saves a lot of money and is bound to make it sell. Not only is the film's marketing also marketing for the game, but the film itself is. And vice versa.

Well, as long as Leorne retains creative control...

So what are they going to do when the Abe movie comes out? Will they make a new Abe game? Rerelease the old ones? Now that would be cool - they could finally do that bonus pack with Sligstorm they were talking about! If (and only if) they could regain the publishing rights, of course.

Not a bad idea to make a movie then a game. Even though the movies that were made in to games were kinda stinky. (Van Hellsing wasn't)

Movie > game will always do better then vice versa. I can't realy think of anything that would prove otherwise except maybe with Final Fantasy.
This interview realy shows Lorne putting the presure on stories. While Oddworld is known for it's graphics, the stories in the Oddworld games are maybe even more important then the graphics.

That is percisely what I was thinking Havoc.

The reason video game movies sucked in the past was probabaly or most likely due to poor story development. Oddworld as we all know has something that the others don't, and that is a well put together story to go by. Without a good, well established story and idea the movie will easily fall apart. Super Mario Bros, Tomb Rader were all fun games but in a way I feel that when the production of the films were happening there was a lack of story which made the movie really shitty. Basically a story and idea is the heartbeat of a movie without it your dead in the water.

In the case of the Doom story I remember that the original writer of the series' story got problems with the producers and had to write an other story he didn't like at all just to fit the "hollywood standarts", a shame realy

Hollywood standards! What is Hollywood standards these days? I tell you the truth, there is better stuff being produced in independant film making and story writing than Hollywood. Original ideas and amazeing stories mostly are generated in the independant market. Look at me for instance, I am not known but I am currently working on a series of stories where I write it, illustrate it, and get it published or share it with individuals at a comic book convention or some kind of expo where if people like it can easily start my career. Sadly enough though, most of the independant filmakers and writers like myself turn into the very thing that they are against. That is the corporate identity of Hollywood. George Lucas is a prime example of such a case. He started out as a person like you and I working in his own home, belonging to an independant filmaking guild called "American Zoatrobe." One day he comes up with a story called Star Wars and boom, he is on his way to Hollywood. All his life he wanted to stay independant but without even knowing it he became the very thing he hates, a corprate identity.

Now Lorne if he is smart will avoid turning into a little piece of Hollywood because so far its seems as if he is avoiding the constraints of Hollywood such as publishing issues and creative control issues. He wants complete control of his product which is a good thing. I am glad he is out of the game industry because for a little bit he was becoming Hollywood and now at least he understands that.
