PS2 or Xbox?

A couple questions.

First, which system will you be buying Stranger for?

And also, which system do you think Oddworld has more of a future on? Xbox or PS2?

Personally, I think it'll do better with Sony. Xbox gamers are more stereotypical in general, which explains why the majority of Xbox games are either FPS or racing. Playstation gamers are more apt to enjoy something a little out of the ordinary.

If you look at games like Soul Calibur 2 and whatnot that were released on both PS2 and Xbox, the downgrade in graphics is minimal. Plus, titles like Silent Hill 3 look a helluva lot better than a lot of the games released on Xbox.

Therefore, I have no doubts that the PS2 version will look and play just as well as the Xbox version. I just think that the audience available on the PS2 would be more accepting of an oddworldly title. As we saw with Munch's Oddysee, Xbox gamers don't tend to jump on uniqueness.

Ever heard of PORTS? Let me devine...
A port is a game developed for a certain console but then copied to another without altering anything exept for the keypad controls. Therefor, when a game is made for PS2 it has good grapics on that console, though on others, wheter they have more or less engine power, it still looks crappy becouse of the original game engine was not modified for that console.
Game's made X-box Exclusive always look a lot better then the ports.

and it will probably be developped on xbox by OWI themself and then EA will find someone to convert it to PS2

Whoever said that Stranger would be a port on either system?

And Soul Calibur 2 was originally made for Gamecube and then ported to Xbox and PS2, and each version looks just as good. Same thing with Spider-man (PC/PS2/GCN/Xbox), Silent Hill 2 (PC/PS2/Xbox), Silent Hill 3 (PC/PS2), Vice City (PC/PS2/Xbox), and The Thing (PC/PS2/Xbox).

Developers DO often do a good deal of additional engine coding during the porting process in order to get it running smoothly on other systems. They have to, otherwise it wouldn't run at all, since each console has a different operating system. It'd be like trying to run a PC game on a Mac.

Besides, the only real downgrade that occurs when porting a game to PS2 is the lack of bumpmapping support, but from what we've seen of stranger, that doesn't seem to be employed much anyways.

EDIT:
:

With the recent problems betwen OWI and Microsoft, I'm surprised they're even making the game for Xbox. Microsoft basically told OWI to fsck themselves. The only reason they're probably still making an Xbox version is because fans that bought one for Munch's Oddysee would be pissed off if they had to buy a PS2 as well in order to play Stranger.

OFCOURSE THEY ALTER IT SO IT CAN RUN ON A CONSOLE! DUH! I just didnt think I needed to mention it to you...

What Im trying to say is that the PS 2 might not have the requierd engine power to fully support Oddworld grapics. Especialy since Abe Babe reported to us that the Gameplay engine is almost as detaild as the CG movie's, I highly have my doubts to how much the PS 2 can take.
The PS 2 already has trouble with having a lot of cars on screen in Driv3r, let alone being able to support grapics of this kind.

Typical response from an Xbox owner. Always talking about how powerful it is. Perhaps you should actually look at some of the games on PS2. Silent Hill 3, as I said, looks and runs a helluva lot better than many of the better looking games on Xbox. The only likely difference between Xbox and PS2 versions of Stranger will be that the loading times will be longer on PS2, since it has less powerful ram. But if they were really concerned about loading times, they'd release it on Gamecube instead, since it has the fastest RAM to date (even faster than Rambus).

I have both systems and Xbox is more powerful. Soul Calibur 2 didn't have a downgrade in graphics, it had a minimal upgrade. Why are we debating the systems' power? All of them will be replaced by a much better system soon anyway. The reason OW is not on Gamecube is because no ties were created between them and Nintendo, and personally, I hate Nintendo and it would be a shame to walk into a video store and see the next Oddworld game sitting next to Mario on the rental shelf. In about 5 years, the Xbox will be practically obsolete compared to some giant system they just released.

The stuff I said, where based on facts. I saw a preview of driv3r and the general grapics it had where not even close to stranger and already it had trouble with a lot of moving objects... like cars. Thus Im saying I highly DOUBT how much the PS 2 can take.

Keyword: Minimal

Of course the Xbox version is going to look slightly better. The hardware permits it, so naturally they're going to exploit it. Most of the time, it's just the use of bump/normal mapping on the Xbox which makes games look better. Bumpmapping gives the game a little more depth, while Normal mapping smooths everything out.

However, anyone who doubts the PS2's power and ability is gravely mistaken.

EDIT:

That'd be purely due to the engine coding. OWI has extensive previous experience working with Sony's hardware.

Really, if you doubt the PS2 version will be able to handle it, you're actually doubting OWI's ability to MAKE it handle it.
If you look at Max Payne 2 on PS2, it's complete shit because they didn't put in the time or effort to make it good. OWI has always been about quality. It may take them a little extra longer to perfect it on the PS2, but I have no doubts it'll be every bit as good as the Xbox version when it is.

EDIT AGAIN:

Hmm. You're pretty biased against the very company that invented gaming as we know it.
And yes, new hardware will be released in a matter of time (Xbox 2 has actually been schedueled for a release next year, which will likely be it's downfall, just like the Dreamcast). But why can't we still compare and enjoy the hardware that's already available to us? Plus, Stranger is going to be released this generation, not next.

Both ... as I own both consoles, I will be buying it on both. The US version firstly when it is released there [as I have an American Xbox], and then the local [Australian] release for the PS2.

Although I enjoy both consoles, I do seem to find that the PS2 has a wider range of games than the Xbox. Like you say, Xbox has a lot of FPS and racing games which I really aren't into. I find PS2 games appeal to me a lot more, particularly how there are a lot of RPGs. As a result, it seems that PS2 gamers seem to enjoy a larger range of games and although the Xbox has come a long way, the PS2 still has the larger market out of the two consoles.

I generally think that the Xbox has smoother graphics, although I have seen some PS2 games that have impressive graphics also. I only own one title for both consoles which is Silent Hill 2, but it's hard to compare the graphics of my two systems when you are running a NTSC Xbox on a PAL TV, it degrades some graphical elements, like red is shown as pink ... makes blood splatters very amusing [I wonder if there is a convertor I can get to fix that issue].

PS2 has a hdd as well, granted it'll cost you an extra $150 for both it and the network adaptor required to hook it up. You do get a free game with it, but it's hardly worth it :P

There's no shame in saying the Xbox has a bit more power, that's just the way it is. I think the PS2 is great, but it's engine is already alot closer to being stretched as thin as it can get by the newer games. I have both systems, and I'd have to choose Xbox, just for the extra kick I know it would provide.

Both for me since I do have a PS2 and a X-Box. But I tell ya what, it really doesn't bother me wether its X-Box or PS2. Most certainly when new consoles are released into the market OWI will produce games for those bran new systems. I will get any system Oddworld is produced on. I have a job I make enough money so I know how to successfully budget for such things.

What I do is I keep all my Oddworld games AO, AE, and MO seperate from my other games. I am createing sort of an Oddworld library which I can't wait when the whole quintology is complete. I am going to have a whole shelf devoted to Oddworld games and stuff.

Oddworld library, eh? Do you have any of the Gameboy games then? :P

I know the Xbox has more power, but actually, no game has ever used the full potential of the PS2. But in order to do that, there'd have to be one hell of an engine backing the game. I doubt any game has used even 1/3 of the Xbox's power to date.

Nah not really I prefer the regular games over the Game Boy Stuff. But all honest to ya I have been thinking about picking up the Game Boy Oddworld games aswell so I can make it fully complete. I do have all kinds other Oddworld material on this shelf like artwork I did, the stratagy guides, and the Christmas cards, and the stuff Alf has been sending to us every now and then like those stickers. I also have a mirror etching I did back in highschool with the OWI symbol I etched into it. But if I am going to put the Game Boy stuff on this shelf of mine devoted to Oddworld then I need to figure out a way to display the small Game Boy Oddworld games aswell. Which I don't think will be too much of a hassel for me seemingly that already I have an idea for such a display to be put on this shelf.

Ah, the great Oddworldian battle between PlsyStation 2 and Xbox. I own all the major consoles at the moment (though funding on my siblings and mine's behalf mostly), and I still have to say that the PlayStation 2 has a better range of games. However, the fact that the Xbox is more powerful cannot be denied.

As for how the game will be released. I think they'll release them on the Xbox and PlayStation 2 simultaneously. We know from things that an Oddworld Inhabitant has written, that Oddworld creates their games without a console in mind (so, using all the minimum specs). So that, when need be, they can fiddle around with a few things, and make it compatible with whichever console.

This means that Oddworld Inhabitants wouldn't need to license out another company to develop multi-console ports.

Hmmm. Well, I was going off what Paul O'Connor said yonks ago. But I think I know what you're talking about, in reference to some things C. Bloom has mentioned?

Perhaps the extra release date time is due to the creation of a PS2 release? But I highly doubt that is the case.

Who's idea was to put a large lime green X ontop on a console?
Mircosoft should shoot the designer just for that. Bastard designer.

PS2 also has a wider range of games from where to choose from, as someone might've already mentioned before, I'm just too lazy to read all the replies.

AND! Final Fantasy and most of the best SquareEnix games are on PS2! So there
Enough reason for me to get an PS2...if I wouldn't already have one that is.
If Lorne Lanning or who-the-hell-ever decided to release all the future OW games on Xbox or some other Microsoft console, then fine. I'm not wasting my money on ugly crap. Or something like that

...though I still think it was pretty shitty to first announce the release on MO on PS2 and then change to Xbox on all of the sudden. I even recall reading an game magazine article where Lorne said something that "PS2 is th best console to publish MO on" and "we at OWI are ready to wait for Sony's new console for future OW releases". Bloody liar...

K, I'm done now!
