Penny Arcade pokes fun at Lanning yet again! Hooray (grins through teeth)!

You know, I love PA a lot. Not you, ParamiteAbe. Sit down. I mean the ever popular Penny Arcade.

But every single time they mention Oddworld, or more precicely its creator Lorne Lanning (I'll knife you one if you didn't know who that is by now), it's some crap that's meant to humiliate him in some way, shape or form.

Penny Arcade has just released a strip featuring Lanning, Tycho and Gabe, in which they congradulate Lorne for "getting out of the gaming industry." Now, I appriceate the kind words "Gabe" had to say about Stranger, but for God sakes! Cut the guy some slack!

The first comic was based on the fact that *to my knowledge* Lorne wanted to make money off of his game. Correct me if I've missed a detail, I wasn't here to get the full story. But uh-oh and oh noes, a game company wants to make money off of their product! Someone sound the sirens! How many millions do you think Halo 2, Warcraft 3 or the damn Splinter Cell games have made?

The second one they made was about some rumor that Lorne was firing his staff. RUMOR. Again, I'm only going on what I read, and Oddblog has stated that the strip was based on a rumor, and I'll gladly and blindly follow it's word.

This one: It's just Tycho and Gabe being what they be best: asses. Lorne has a right to look pissed.

Here's a bright fuckin' idea, guys. Give Oddworld a little positive reinforcement for once instead of gobbing over the next fuckin' Splinter Cell game that'll come out in another 3 months!

Like I said and completely contradicted, I love Penny Arcade. They have a good thing going with their gaming refrences, but for once just... I donno... say something encouraging to Oddworld. Something more than a damn paragraph about something you haven't played yet.

We can expect yet another jab when the info about the movie starts to grow.

Anyway, those are my views. I freel like I just personalized this whole thread, but you guys can deal with that.

Feel free to correct anything I may have gotten wrong or missed. I will correct my errors when I read about them.

I think this is one of those cases where the punchline is used only because it can be. In other words, they would probably say the same thing if any big name developer quit the industry. It's a cheap gag. They could have done something a little more clever, but sometimes the shortcut is so obvious, that it becomes hard not to take the exit (sorry for the random metaphor). There's really no need to take offense.

Well, I can't see the link right now because the site's down, but I have seen the other strip that PA came out with earlier. I just tend to overlook stuff like that because it's quite ridiculous and immature, really. And like MojoMan said, they could have been a bit more clever and at least put some wit into their strips and quite frankly, I think it just makes PA look completely stupid. :/ Well, it is, after all, made as a joke and to have a laugh, I suppose. While I don't find it funny, I'm sure some people do.

Take a readie of Tycho's comments on that strip:

The strip has a sharpness to it, something mean, but speaking for myself the idea that I could just watch an Oddworld story without having to twiddle a gamepad is something I'm genuinely looking forward to. Stranger, what would eventually come to be called Stranger's Wrath, was my favorite of the bunch - and I was still toiling from cinema to cinema. The desire to slide into noninteractive entertainment has always been there - their Big Brand aspirations being clear from the first Abe manual - and I think it's also clear that he would enjoy it more anyway.

So he is a bit of a fan. Though I can't tell whether he's saying he doesn't like the games or would just like a movie more.

BTW what the heck does "Meef Quesarito" mean?

The strip just makes the characters look pretentious and egocentric. Whether it's Lorne Lanning (or OWI) or not is irrelevant. Lame, derogative jokes are useless.

Penny Arcade! pokes fun at the games industry and related bits and bobs. There's nothing wrong with poking fun at people. Everybody does it all the time. It doesn't make you big, but it makes people laugh, and with any luck the people being made fun of aren't so sensitive as to take it personally.

The first strip was about the rumour that Lorne accepted a lucrative cash deal from Microsoft for their exclusive rights to Munch's Oddysee, not just that the company made money from the deal (which they didn't - at least, they didn't make as much as they would have by sticking to the PS2). Yes, it's a rumour, but a lot of the time, comics and jokes leap at the opportunity to make fun of the whole situation or the rumour itself, and not whatever schmuck is stuck at the bad end of it. They're not saying it's true. They're finding the humour in the idea of it happening.

Having said that, I was a little taken back when I first saw the first two strips, but this one is so obviously just a cheap gag as others have noticed. It's nowhere near as sharp or mean as Tycho says. I love PA. My opinion of them isn't faltered at all because of this … just their decline in comedy.

I've been reading Penny Arcade for ages too. I absolutely love their digs at Lorne, not because I have anything against Lorne, but I can see how twisting the truth can be humourous.

I don't think you should all get so mad about this, PA are constantly taking the piss out of everything in the games industry. Look through all the previous comic strips, there are hordes of EA gags, for example.
