A riddle from startrek!

A man is stranded on a empty plannet, though there is air and water but no barries or eatable animals... The only thing he is carrying is a callender. After a year, a spaceship finds him and rescues him. He has survived the hole year, and he even has a full belly. How can this be?

Well, he ate the dates, anyway. I'd get very hungry if I only had one date to eat every day... Wouldn't you get tempted to just eat all of them, and hope you got rescued?
