Surfacing... I think you should go. If they are your favorite band it would be the only time that you will get to see them for years. I know when I missed the Metallica concert back in 1992... I had to wait 3 years for them to return to Australia!!!
I have some advice for you though if you decide to go. If it is a general admission concert, stay towards the middle-back of the crowd. If there is a choice for reserved seats, get a reserved seat. It may not seem as cool than going at the front... but from my experience with different metal/alternative concerts... the mosh pit is the most dangerous place to be. Even for a band that is not known for being violent (or having a violent crowd), it can be pretty bad in there. I myself got pulled to the ground during Hole at the Big Day Out many years ago. It is an experience I never want to go through again... as it is quite scary being at the bottom of a surging crowd with some people not realizing you are down there, and others trying to help you get up.
Other than that, don't let anyone provoke you, stay away from any problem areas. I always went to concerts by myself (sometimes my brother would go with me), as none of my friends were really into the same type of music that I was.
Abe Babe...
