Video-games ate my Babies...

So, people say video-games are bad for you.

They say violent video-games inspire you to be a violent person.

They say they're more dangerous than films, because films aren't interactive and don't give you incentives (points etc).

What do YOU say?

This topic was conceived in my mind as i watched Amir Kahn willingly train violent thugs to become professional fighters.

...for those of you not familiar with Amir, he's a professional boxer. And what is he doing with his talent? He's teaching people, who're already violent, how to fight properly.

Fun!

On that matter, if video-games are bad, and they're just a bunch of pixels, what're your thoughts on actual violence for entertainment? ...in real-life 3D viscerality.

OMG JACOB!
*Over breathes due to excitement*
!!!
YAY!

Anyway, I've never understood the whole 'video games = violence' thing, as I'm pretty much a pacifist, yet I love Grand Theft Auto games... I think if people have it in them, anything could trigger a burst of violence. Also, I've always seen video games as more of a way that people can maybe release some built up frustration without hurting anyone else.

As for actual violence as entertainment? Boxing and stuff? I hate it.

Well, I don't mind wrestling, but maybe its because of the silicon encrusted women. maybe.

Anyway, The hodge podge of morons that actually believe that games like the original Mortal Kombat and NIGHT TRAP *shiver* are the cause of that Korean Douches attack on virginia tech or those kids who claim "Grand theft auto made me do it" are simply the result of a mind-controlling pathogen created by Jack Thomspon.

Maybe their just stupid.

Seriously, I've never known one person in my area getting violent because of video games. Would Gordon Brown actually do something about them?

"Would Gordon Brown actually do something about them?"

I hope not. So far the Government, barring a few idiot MPs, have stayed out of the issue. In fact, on 'Child of Our Time', it was proved that video-games actually helped social co-ordination, adventurousness and interaction.

"that Korean Douche"

From what i understand, that 'Korean Douche' was being bullied on a constant basis. Now, i'm not saying that all victims of bullying should go Postal, but calling him a 'Korean Douche', is unfair. I don't know much about the incident, but i hope that he killed off all of the bullies.

And, off-topic slightly, it really pissed me off when he was treated as the bad guy, and the victims the good, when in reality you just know (some of) the victims were absolute cocks to him.

Everybody is loved when they die, it seems.

Meheh. Mind you, as a child I played games where I was a character from a video game so I guess you could say something like that happened. So yes, video games do have an effect on children's behavior but, as has been said before, the parenting overrules such games and acts so if I child kills someone and says he learned to do it off grand theft auto I think it is ultimately down to bad parenting.

I think all this started from bad parents/government/social services or whoever merely trying to find something to blame for violent teens on the streets. The real causes, however, are partly alcohol, and mainly bad parenting (though the kids themselves are also largely to blame...some parents try to keep them nice, but they're violent anyway).

This whole case died down a while ago...at the very least, I haven't heard nuttin' for ages.

Thats not what I heard, Jacob.

What I got is that whenver people tried to make with the friendship he'd ignore them, apparently when he was in Grade 4 he had a speech problem, people laughed at him for that, but they still tried to be kind and friendly, but he just shunned people.

I think he's a douche because no one actually did anything to him (When I was in grade 5-7 I was constantly bullied about my weight, I had a severe obesity issue at one point, but I didn't take up arms against those people, I lost some weight and am not nearly as prone to heart attacks that I once was.), but seriously, youve gotta take the good with the bad, and if you cant, somethings wrong with ya.

So yeah, he was a big bitch who hurt a lot of people, but wasn't even man enough to face the consequences.

No. Uh-uh. Fail. Denied. WRONG!

Saints row and grand theft auto are also mediocre games, but at the same time, are incredibly unrealistic.

So no, A good example of a 'game' that makes people go crazy is not any of the sandbox gang games.

"(When I was in grade 5-7 I was constantly bullied about my weight, I had a severe obesity issue at one point, but I didn't take up arms against those people"

...you were probably incapable of doing so, anyway.

Like i said, i don't know much about the case, but if a kid is unhappy enough to go on a rampage, something must be wrong. The whole point of 'everybody is loved when they're dead' still remains, however. In England, an 11 year old has recently been shot, apparently he was a "little Angel" and he will be "sadly missed", when in actual fact he was a little c*nt who terrorised neighbours and bullied others.

It irritates me, then, that his death is mourned. Sure, he was 11, a child, but he was also a problem, and that problem has been solved. Should the person who shot him be arrested and jailed? Yes. But should the 'victim' be matyr'd, no.

Our country is going to the Fags.

"Saints row and grand theft auto are also terrific games, but at the same time, are incredibly unrealistic"

Apparently the 4th GTA is steeped in more realism. I've worked behind the counter of games stores and had kids as young as 8 ask me about games such as Doom, The Suffering and, most recently, GTA. ...with the last one, the kid was around 12, and stood with his parents.

Oh, and apparently Cameron has said he'll tackle crime by tackling violence in the music, film and game industry. ...this concerns me, as Cameron has been shown to be a complete and utter prick when it comes to standing up for knee-jerk issues.

Anyone saying fictional violence influences real violence can die in a fire. Anyone trying to restrict access to violence or sex can die in a naked fire.

Video games do not cause everyone to be violent, obviously. Only those with defects in the head, and the stupid. These people =/= me. So this issue doesn't bother me till they take away my goresplattering shooting games.

The games have an age rating for a reason. Sure, people still get others to buy it, but it's there choice. And if they don't like it, they can rot.

Video games don't cause violence, violent people play video games; you have to enjoy violence in the first place. So this whole "bad for you" thing is a load of utter bull shit. Violent games interest me mildly, but I wouldn't roll over and die for them. the best games out there are the medievil games, spyro, oddworld (duh) vib ribbon (ooh yes!!) and my favourite is silent hill. not because of the violence and gore, but because of the huge and very deep theories it has on phsycology and sub conciousness especially.
The player makes the game, not vice versa.

Spyro? Only the original PS1 games. After they went to a different developer, they became sucky. And you forgot to put Halo there.
Violent people play violent video games? I play video games. I find GTA amusing. Yet I've never really attacked anyone before, apart from the odd provoked thing. I'm not a violent person, particularly, yet I still find it amusing. As Alcar said, I'm just not one of those particularly moronic people, who probably were violent anyway in the first place.

Yeah, most of the original PS1 and N64 games were the greats.
Just about anything from rare.
