General Music Chatter

Ok, i've put to death the demon that is 'What are you listening to v.2'

It is being replaced with this merry thread. Few rules, by all means post what you're listening to, but back it up with a post of substance, explaining why you're listening to them, what you're into at the moment, recent musical discoveries, or relating for another member's posts.

Also, talk about instruments that you can play and bands that you may be in. As this is more general music talk, i won't be merging the Metal Thread in here, and neither will any Rap Dance Trance Or Techno thread and such that come up, as in understand the need not to generalise music as one. Improvement suggestions in this thread please.

Anyway, i'm listening to Buffalo Soldier by Bob Marley & The Wailers, i think reggae is strangely popular among myself and a few of my friends, ok it is the more mainstream reggae, but still it is an unusual choice for people who're into slipknot and Metallica. And of course there is the whole appeal to stoners, but i'm not including them among my friends for the sake of many a stoner loves a bit of reggae.

You evil bastard. May I remind you, post wise in that thread, ahem...
Hobo 106

You had the most posts in that thread, and you turned your back on us! TEH EVILZORZ!

Meh. Now at least we have to justify why we're listening to what we are listening to.

OK, I play guitar. But lately, I have been ****ing with drum machines, which is great, because I can make songs now. Before, I had so many riffs in my head and no way to make them songs without stealing other peoples loops.

I own four guitars, one is borrowed(the bass). I have an acoustic, a bass, an electric and a Back Packers guitar, my latest child. I play in un untitled band and I have my own project, Asphyxiated.

I am listening to the Scrabainia theme, as to gain warm tribal inspiration for drum beats.

Nice work Hobo, was getting fed up with people posting meaningless crap without even commenting on what others have posted, and without a hope of having someone comment on their post.

I'm currently listening to the Road To Perdition theme by Thomas Newman, and I must say it really is very good. Kind of an Irish/Celtic theme going on in there. Really powerful music, perfect for artistic inspiration if you were to ever need any. Dunno if I can say yet whether it matches up to the music to the Shawshank Redemption, but it's definately close.

Recommended downloading if anyone has limewire.

Haha! You got ironic...ized.

Anyway, Dino, do you like bands like Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphy? They're Celtic rock, and I think they're pretty 1337, so there must be some possibility.

I'm dabbling in (as always) the Bloody Hollies, as well as.... hmmm. Well, I'm actually not listening to that much else. Huh.

Oui, I agree, Hobo. Anyway, I am so glad Hobo made this thread because me and my friend that joined are total intrumentalists and love music. I play Euphomium (look it up, I'm not explaining it for the 500th time!) and I used to play Piano but I haven't been to a single lesson in over a year. I just got into this Romanian band called O-zone, you may have heard their number one song turned into a parody by that fat guy .

Dropkick Murphys are what I consider punk, and although I don't go out of my way to listen to them at all I liked what I heard of them from the few demo CDs that I've got.

I am currently listening to Placebo's Haemoglobin, in hype of Placebo's new album. w00t! Is that backing up enough? O.o Please don't hit me.

Blow Up The Outside World by Soundgarden. I purchased A-Sides, which I guess is a collection of all their singles since 1987, or something of the like. They really were a great band... pity I was too young (not even born yet, as a matter of fact) to enjoy the whole late 80s/early 90s Seattle music scene thingamabob. I caught the tail end of some stuff by some really excellent bands -- Black Hole Sun came out when I was seven or so, I LOVED that music video -- but it was basically on its last leg by then. I feel so left out.

Oh, and I adore Flogging Molly. I've been listening to Drunken Lullabies once a day at the least, and taking it on any road trip I happen to go on. Schwindt's drumming leaves somewhat of a gap in the band's otherwise amazing talent, but it's not enough to make them anything short of kick-ass.

Metallica's Battery, off the Master Of Puppets album. I miss the old album's style of opening songs with the classical guitaring, i thought it was quite unique and added a nice bit of flavour to it. Anyway, this song is awesome beyond belief, this, the title track Orion and Welcome Home(Sanitarium) are tied in uberness. Yet i prefer Ride The Lightning as an album for it's overall feel instead of it's song writing quality.

Yeah, I love the deceiving intros to Fight Fire With Fire and Battery. I also love the backwards guitars opening of ...And Justice for All. 'Twas great as an opening song when I saw them.

What happened to Metallica? Their first 3 CDs are mandatory Bay Area Thrash, ...And Justice for all showed they could still kick it(but not as much) even without Burton's mindscrewing bass work, Black was the beginning of the end and the Load album sealed it for me. How do you go from singing songs called "Leper Messiah" and wearing leather and kicking incomparable amount of thrash ass to selling out so hugely? They dressed like pimps, made music videos, and sued their own fans for God's Sake!!!
On Topic: Man, I really wanna see Gigantour. I've also heard that Testament is going hook up with a reunited Heathen(effing sweet!!!) and tour the U.S.
Also, Morbid Angel got Vincent back and started touring about 8 months ago and I'd really love to see 'em live. Armored Saint also toured with U.F.O. and I really wanted to see it but no, I had to work that weekend.
Also, wanna see Motorhead/Corrosion of Conformity. Lemmy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Motorhead rox0r, bought their best of the other week, the 2 cd version with 40 tracks.

I will disagree, i can enjoy some of Metallica's stuff after And Justice... I quite like St Anger and what i've listened to off the black album has been ok, but reload was a bit poo. except Fuel and Low Man's Lyric, which i enjoy a lot. But thrash > trash anyday.

At the moment, I love these two songs:

Groove Cutters - We Close Our Eyes
Colette - What Will She Do For Love

They're both house tracks inspired by 80's songs and the result is amazing. I also like Mint Royale - Singing in the Rain. Remake of a classic.

Other songs I love at the moments are also:

Lemongrass - Comme Toujours
People Under The Stairs - Schooled In The Trade

Both very stylish and very easy to listen and relax to.

Right now, my favourite genres are: Listening Pearl, Acid/Mushroom Jazz, House, Electronica, Dance etc...
I also love anything from OM Records, MOLE Records and Bar Lounge Batucada Records. They're the record companies that produce most music that I like.

Favourite artists: Lemongrass, Audio Lotion, Groove Cutters, Mint Royale, Soulstice, People Under The Stairs, Digital Alkemist, Rithma, Yonderboi, Colette, Layo & Bushwacka and Calmstreet.

Any avid megaman fan needs to be listening to Horse the Band. The song 'cutsman' in particular.

These kraft singles are like brothers to me, so rape their music.

Hehe. Erm...I can't really explain this very well. It's sort of like a fusion of Acid Jazz, Electronica and House, but it doesn't really sound like either of them. Oh forget it, they're categories on their own. All I can say is that they're very good and have elements of lots of different types of stylized music in them. Was that OK? I didn't really know how to explain it. Sorry.

Musical rant I feel I must say:

People who say that ska is stupid... ugh. Ignorant buffoons. I try to tell people I like ska, and the only thing that's worse than someone asking "What's that?" is someone who says "I heard a ska song once... it was stupid." Wow, one song? From a genre as varied as any other? So many people have such little musical diversity and acceptance for things they've never heard these days, and it darn well sucks. It's no wonder why Green Day can pull out a under developed concept album and woo the world. The bright side is that a good few old (and new) bands are still making a living somehow, meaning there are some likeminded individuals out there.

Hell, maybe someday ska will have itself another nitch in the mainstream. Nu metal has worn its course, and this crapfest known as "new wave/dance revival" certainly can't last long. Who on this earth could stand listening to a bunch of Killers soundalikes clogging there airwaves? And though it's a highly optimistic thought, maybe all the annoying emo/screamo/shit trendiness will finally rest in the depths of Hell. And for bonus points, take Hot Topic with it.

As varied as any other genre? Are you sure? It all sounds pretty much the same to me... Same sort of fast paced, upbeat rythem with the usual horns and stuffs. Maybe that's just me but I've definately heard some more varied genres with more original exploration of styles rather than just copying everyone else. Of course all genres have that problem... they set their own stereotypes which people follow to try to make sure that their music is defined as "Genre X". But in most genres you do get songs that break the mold and only barely fit into any genre... I just don't tend to find that with ska. They all sound like midly more punky versions of old 1980's ska records.

And I've heard a ton of ska, seriously. Everything from The Madness to Less Than Jake and The Aquabats... as well as a few underground ska bands like Solarbeat. And I hate all of it, it just rubs me the wrong way, but that doesn't stop me from noticing that there isn't really much exploration going on in the genre...

I'd say it's the same for emo, punk, and numetal. They're overplayed, overcommericalised and heavily copied. As for Greenday, god, nearly all their new songs sound just as bad as the last. They seem to have this amazing talent (if that's what you would call it) for reducing all their songs down to the same dull uninspired drone. It just puts me off the whole scene. Money and music really do not go together... they create this really dishonest crap.
