People who pretend to like things so that you like them...

are pathetic. I think the worst case of this I've ever seen was with a guy named Marty. He'd pretend to like the music that I and other people did. Like I give a **** that you enjoy Parliament and Ted Nugent too!
He'd also pretend to like movies that he'd obviosly never seen, such as Reservoir Dogs and Full Metal Jacket. No, thats Otto's favorite movie.
He also dresed very trendy. Other than this kind of weak behavior he was a very nice, funny guy.
I have a feeling that people like him will always behave in this immature fashion, thus ruining cool things forever. Is there a way to make someone snap out of this infantile phase without seeming like a stuck-up tool?

Statikk, you could covertly say something which would incite a response which would prove that the guy is bullshitting. But that would be embarassing for him. I can't really think of a nice way to do it.

I think it's just stupid to be so despread for attention that your willing to lie about what you like and what you don't like. I don't realy care what others think about me. Often I'm refered as a weirdo (even though I've never heard it, I just know) just cuz I happen to like the tigers as much as I do. Like I care what you think of me? I think what causes this is low self-esteem and insecurity. Don't be angry with this type of people because they have a serious problem. Instead, if you really care for them, try to help them see they're just great the way they are.

As Emerson said (I'm so quotetastic today), "Envy is ignorance; imitation is suicide." It's ignorant to want to be like someone else because you can never be that person, and you're ignoring your own precious qualities. Imitating someone else is killing the very person that you are.

Maybe I can talk to him in private. I'm rooming with him again and I don't think I can take "I like Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks too! What a surprise!" for another 9 months.

How do you know he's full of BS? Just curious. I mean, he couldn't continue to hold up the act if he had no real knowledge of what he says he likes.

Tell this guy that he doesn't have to like whatever you like. It's only natural for people to find common ground with people as part of a friendship - the guy obviously likes you so much that he WANTS there to be common ground so that he can be your friend... Just tell him that he doesn't have to make it up and you like him as he is.

And tell him that you understand that it's embaressing but that you don't care. That'll make him feel better. And when he's come clean, just take him out to go get a coffee or something - you never know, he'll probably end up being a great friend for life.

I'll ask him who he thinks the better drummer is, what last nights episode was about, his favorite skit, sketch, or bit and he folds. Thats how I know. And Dino, he already is a pretty good friend, though the "posiing" is starting to rub me the wrong way.

While I can't say I really know anyone who pretends to like things so I accept them, it does remind me of some people I've known over the years who lie about how much stuff they own to get people to like them. As if I care how rich someone is.
I disassociated myself with all of them a few years ago though. Couldn't stand them.
