I think Oddworld will always stay the master of 2D games. But 3D games are just done way to much to make unique. Not even Oddworld can come up with a concept for a 3D game and make it original. In MO, I hardly saw any diffrence with lets say Zelda. Do this, you get that. Do that, you get this. You must do that or you can't go on. Ofcourse thats all there in a 2D game as well, but in a much diffrent form.
Obviously OWI didn't have a choice, but it realy is going to 3D games that made the Oddworld games lose it's unique touch. Which is probably why MO and Stranger both didn't do so well. The story was nice, but the gameplay wasn't in any way diffrent then any other random RPG game. Zelda, Fable, ect. ect. They all have the same concept and idea in the gameplay and I can't blame anyone for finding it boring after a while.
I liked Stranger, don't get me wrong. But the entire; Work trough the area, end up with a level boss and then get a shortcut back to the general area reminds me way to much of Zelda, if not all kinds of other RPG's.
Another factor is, that IMO, 3D shooters like Stranger don't belong on a console in the first place. The control of a gun requires a mouse and keyboard. Not some stupid Xbox controler. This is also the reason MO and OSW are so easy to beat. You can't be as fast with a console controler as you can with a mouse and keyboard and the game's AI is adjusted to counter that fact.
If OWI ever is going to make another game like OSW, I would for one recommend to reintergrate the 2D element somehow and mix it with 3D instead of doing it fully 3D. And second they might want to concider bringing the games back to PC.
