This Asian Crap can all go away

Whats with cartoons being all Japanified? Take the average lousy cartoon. Slap a lousy product to it. What do you get in sales? Jack squat. Now horribly disfigure the characters. Make them cutesy and deform them when they are very happy or sad. Now throw on some derivative figures and lousy game and your sales are nuts. Now I'm not baggin' on the old school action stuff. That stuff is the bomb. I'm talking about these abominations that we are now told are Saturday morning cartoons.
Statikk HDM: Cause I enjoy "American" style animation, where the shit looks like what it actually looks like.

I always thought "Jap" was a racial slur, similar to, if less extreme than, the N-word, the B-word, and all those countless other stupid words made up to point out that someone has skin colored differently from someone else's. But suddenly I'm seeing it used a lot in a casual sense... have I been misinformed, or is that word losing its stigma? But anyway.

I'm of the opinion that most, if not all real anime, is somewhere between "Almost Not Too Sucky" and "Total Undiluted Crap". But anime-style American cartoons hold a special place in my heart. Not so much in my heart, in fact, more like... buried thirty miles below the surface of the earth in a box of rotting feces and rabid wolverines. Yes. That's the place for those cartoons.

On a somewhat related note: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=145 Will VG Cats ever cease to amaze?

In the beginning there was Ren and Stimpy.
Then Anime came along, he started well.
Then Anime's cousin came along, he was kinda boring.
Then Anime's entire race took over international T.V.!
Where's Ren and Stimpy!!!

The stuff on american television is not real anime, it's just an excuse to make shows without putting time and effort into them that can be easily marketed to the pokemon crowd. I don't even like the anime (manga) style, but I do respect the art involved in real anime.

Yeah, Anime "blows". But so what if companies exploit the fact that it's easy to market? That's just business baby, the 'scene' isn't going to sink into the sea because of some trend in commercial cartoon style. There's always going to be a true hard core of cartoonists who'll keep the originality going. Like you guys, your objection to this shit shows that there's always going to be a market and audience for other styles, and that trends can go just as easily as they come.

Hee, Statikk, you give me giggles with your topics sometimes.

I can't really give a firm opinion on this; I haven't been exposed to enough anime-ish stuffs. From what I've heard/read about the plots and such of some shows, I know there's some great stuff out there. But the feelings I get when I walk down the anime section of a store is... sickening and disgusting. All I see are big eyes accompanied by big breasts. It's a shame that the treasures, such as Serial Experiments Lain, the only "real" anime show thing I think I've ever seen, gets buried and lost among this crap.

But since I haven't been exposed to too much of this style, I'm not tired of most of the common traits, like the big sparkly eyes and exaggerated expressions. The (usually hilariously yet disgustingly) enormous breasts I could do without seeing--especially on four year olds. Heh, crazy Hobo. In all seriousness though, I have seen some fairly young characters that look about ten years more mature than they should. Quite disturbing.

Personally, I'm torn. I've seen some anime that I enjoyed, but I've also seen some truely dreadfull things out there. I do, however, despise all these people who are changing everything to flow anime-style, when a bit of originality would go a long way. Take The Triplettes of Belleville, for example. An animated French movie with a truely unique art style. I love it. As they said in one of the ads, "Neither American Disney, nor Japanese Anime." Good show, really.

I don't read Manga, so I have no real oppinion on that, but from what I've seen on the book store shelves, I'm not missing much.

And finally, to answer Raisin's ponderings: Probably never.

See, but those are all the shows that everyone uses as examples. They're also mainstream kids shows, and really, really crappy ones at that. To see the really great stuff, stay up late and watch Adult Swim (Minus SCRYed, what the flying flunk was that? Go away. Steven Jay Blum!)

Cowboy Bebop, Trigun (minus the totally unnessesary silly shit), the new Paranoia Agent (with a hilarious opening sequence and a really good look at the human phyche), Lupin the Third (truly great 60/70's anime), and FLCL are just some of the titles I would reccomend watching.

I also reccoimend Hentai (for the Oddhead of 18 and up). My personal favorites so far are Eiken and Milk Junkies. Sure it's fake and animated, but boobs is boobs.

I'd watch Adult Swim if it didn't make me feel like such a loser.

Some of the most "high brow" anime that I've ever seen has been late night offerings on Sci Fi channel, and they've all been cheesy shit.

Dude, what's so arousing about a DRAWING of porn? I mean, wha? Damn those Japanese perverts. (Not being racist, I'm just saying: WTF?)

Some Stuido Ghibli is ok. But if you look at each film (Exclding Grave of the Butterlies or whatever it is), they all have the smae story. Person meets person, person falls in love with person, climax= person has to seperate with said person. But Spirited Away was good. And Monoke. Plus, Haku is just hotzors.

Other than .hack//sign Im not a fan of Anime. I like the Jap verson of Digimon because it had a somwhat dark and creative storyline but of course they had to turn it into crap with the bad jokes and stupid lines and some episodes have so many things cut out I can't stand it. I hate the english verson of Digimon I'll stick with the Jap's verson the good verson! .hack on the other hand was one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. It has a nice storyline but it can be confusing if you aren't willing to get involved with the show, games, and manga. I love the art work its truly the best I've ever seen. What I really hate right now is that wanna be anime show on nick called Avatar The Last Air Bender.

Serial Experiments Lain is excellent. Neon Genesis Evangelion is pretty good if you don't mind cliche giant robot/mech/cyborg things. Boogiepop Phantom is kinda OK if you can differentiate similar-sounding Japanese names. It gets boring though.

Akira is overrated. Completely.

Spirited Away is also good, as are most of the movies by Miyazaki.

Oh, and Super Munch... I want the image in your sig.

Evangelion is the same old cheesy shit though.

I've only ever watched one anime that wasn't cheesy or inane/stupid. No I can't remember what it was called. But it was good, and has remained the only good anime I've ever seen.

Nowadays I guess eastern animation is very popular here in the states. I understand that alot of folks appreciate & enjoy the ol' classic anime, but please, PUH-lease stop with the cheap saturday morning gimmicks...SERIOUSLY it's like their killing a whole new generation of uh....uhm... I can't think of the word but you know what I mean right? Sooner or later the asian-y style just might die down to maybe..just maybe to a halt and Western animtion can regain it's place again ^_^

Akira was a little overrated, but it was still damn good. And for the record I own it, I bought it for .99 on VHS at a Shopko.
