Anne Rice blows

Seriously, Anne Rice blows. She is a hack, plain and simple. for once I'd like to see someone reading a Lumley novel at a beach instead of Rice's tired shit. A Wamphyri would rip the head off of one of Rice's pussy vamps, then eat the organs with some fava beans and nice chianti, then drain the corse dry and shit down its throat. If you've ever read a Rice novel read 2 novels EACH by Lumley and Lovecraft to cleanse yourself.

Good call, Hannibal.

But anyway, I haven't read any of Rice's stuff ... but I've heard her stuff is pretty good. Is it really that terrible, or do you just not like vampires?

No. Anne Rice sucks compared to Brian Lumley and H.P. Lovecraft. If you've ever read any book you know that the vampires sit round and whine like girly little bitches. Lumley and Lovecraft on the other hand are two of the premier horror writers around and their vamps are steeped in authentic vampire lore and just diabolical, corrupting badassery. For someone to be into horror, Clairebear(assuming you are because of Rice) and not to know of Lovecraft is more than a bit surprising. It's like a sci fi afficianado going "Heinlein who?"
By the way, if you haven't heard of Heinlein you should read the Door into Summer, Star Ship Troopers, Double Star and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Those books are tight reads and beyond savage.

I'm not a "horror afficianado"... I used to read alot of horror when I was about 14... Rice, King, Herbert but in the past decade not a great deal.

I'm always intregued by those who promote an author as veremently as you so I'd like to try what you've recommended... I'm not into sci-fi so if you could post the names of the Lumley and Lovecraft novels I'd really appreciate it.. I hate searching through Amazon blind!

Cheers,

I have looked for Lovecraft stories everywhere but can't find them. This is because one of their stories (about some Cthulu sea monster or something) inspired two of Metallica's songs.

agreed.... the storyline is most confusing, though.....

it's a kick-ass video games series... it's got 2 main characters, Kain (the vamp) and Raziel (a soul demon dude). Theres about 10 games(not sure, but there are alot), and you control either Kain or Raziel in each game, but not both.

You control Kain in the Blood Omen titles, and Raziel in the Soul Reaver titles, but the story line stays the same, and the two titles merge it together.

In the latest game, however, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, you control both Kain and Raziel. It's a pretty cool game. You should check it out.

Actually there's only about five Legacy of Kain games. Two for each character and in Defiance you play both of them. Kain is a very cool, badass vampire king, none of that whiney goth stuff. The story is very complex for a video game series, full of philosophy about good vs evil and time-travel paradoxes and stuff. Raziel used to be a vampire, then Kain destroyed him and he came back as a soul devouring wraith being, able to shift between the physical and spirit worlds throughout the games. Vampires in this series also evolve over time, either becoming gods or deformed monsters.

Kain rocks my pink and stripey socks!! Just because he's aristocratic. Plus, pre-doomed Raziel is quite attractively designed.

I think they should make a movie of the Kain series, although it could get confusing. I don't understand why they didn't make all the games multi-platform, instead of just Kains.

What happened in the last one, by the by? I think i got the gist, was it something to do with Raziel saving Janos, thus making what happened in 'Blood Omen 2' obsolete and thus making the Hylden find another way to take over the world, meaning Kain will have to fight them again...

Blood Omen 2 has always happened since the history changes in Soul Reaver 2. When Raziel 'saved' Janos, he was playing right into the enemy's hands. Now Kain is pretty much on his own. The main author of the series, Amy Hennig, has retired from the story and left it in the hands of people she feels are capable of moving on with it.

On a side note, the creators of the Kain series had similar ambition to that of Lorne Lanning and Oddworld. They wanted to make deep, thought provoking stories that unfolded in a cinematic way. The only problem is, I don't think the LOK team has been as lucky, they're more at the mercy of their publishers.

I hope so. Those are pretty sweet games.
Full names: Brian Lumley, H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft especially seems to have a lot of ties to pop culture like heavy metal artists like Metallica referencing them and there is even a D & D world inspired by his writings.

How did Raziel play into the Hyldens hands?

I think the character designs are pretty good in the LoK universe, especially Turel, he rocked. Sadly, the makers haven't made the SR series for Xbox, so i'm kind of confuzzed by some of the plot elements.

The Hylden lord,(who becomes the Serafan Lord in BO2) Needed Janos' body to posess so he could return to the world from where all the Hylden were banished centuries ago. When Raziel revived Janos, he provided that body. (Turel was the other eligable host, but he was stuck in a pit) Then in BO2, Janos' body will be used to power the Hylden's super weapon after the Hylden lord gets his own body. It all goes back to the murals depicting the Vampire savior vs. the Hylden savior. Raziel is both, because in order to do his part to save the world, he has to help the enemy as well. The good thing is that because of Raziel's sacrifice, Kain now has the one weapon that can defeat the enemy, and he has been purified as well.

Ohh, i see. I just thought that when Raziel saved Janos, he stopped Janos from being the thing that powered the Hyldens super machine thing, thus forcing the Hylden to come up with another plan, thus making Kains first attempt to stop them fail, thus making the Hylden actually take over the LoK world.

Is this story explained in the SR games as well? Or just the LoK games? Because i never actually played the first BO game, i just read up on it.

They're all LOK games, just divided into Blood Omen(Kain's story) and Soul Reaver.(Raziel's story) But in the end it's all part of the same story. Originally, the story wasn't going to go beyond Blood Omen. The Soul Reaver was just a weapon in Kain's inventory, but a few years later they came up with a story to expand on it, and flashed foreward several centuries to when Kain ruled the world. The problem was never that the Hylden would rule the land, that was always Kain's destiny. The problem is that the land was corrupted, so it would just become an empty wasteland unless Kain went back and changed things. Raziel was part of that, Kain had been aware of prophecies about the vampire messiah, so he made Raziel what he is.
