I also love the detail of the factories and environments, every screen was different than the last. I dont think MO will be too "clean cut" looking. You see, AO and AE were 2d games, and the 2d platformer was mastered to perfection so that one could concentrate on detail like OWI did. With the X-Box being very powerful and new, they might not have mastered it, I'm counting on it! I wouldnt be surprised to see in later Oddworld games the level of detail in the environment increase.
Yet, from the screenshots I've seen, the level of detail IS PRETTY HIGH! To put it this way, the backgrounds of the Abe games were not interactive, so they almost had a painting feel to them. In MO, the enviromnet is completely 3D, so that painting effect that I just mentioned is not produced. It may be one of the few advantages that 2D has over 3D, at least in the hands of OWI.
