Slig noses
I have been thinking (yes dangerous pastime I know), thinking about the biology of sligs (well really my Drakkic race...but since I made them related to sligs I figured sligs would have something similar) specifically the location of their noses and sense of smell.
First the location of the nostrils themselves. I think, they are located on either side of the middle face tentacle, almost in-between the middle tentacle and the ones on either side. Not only that...but I think they have a total of four nostrils (hey..its Oddworld), two on the top and two on the bottom (those two are of course, hidden by the tentacles and can't be normally seen.
Why four? While both sets serve as oxygen intakes(or what ever Oddworld residences breathe), the bottom set (the ones underneath the tentacles), serve as the main 'sniffers' (both me and Teal believe sligs have a keen sense of smell). The top set would have 'some' smell receptors, but most of them the bottom set possess. Now not only does the bottom set have the smelling receptors, but the first inch or two of the bottom of the tentacles, starting at the base.
Why the extra 'patches' of receptors? It increase the chance of catching scents (I am no biologist BTW...this is just my...uh...'reasoning') and therefore hints of possible danger.
Now since industrial sligs have to wear masks (because the gluks make them wear them...as far as I know) and the masks cover the part of the slig's face where the nostrils would be (along with the extra patches of receptors along the bottom of the tentacles), their smelling ability is virtually neutralized, making them unable to really 'smell' anything (including that mudokon hiding in the shadows right in front of them). How the heck to they breathe? Well...someone in other topic mentioned that the 'wiring' connected to the mask may be breathing tubes of sorts, but the 'tubes' only carry air to the top set of nostrils...so sligs still can't smell anything....
This is just a theory...what do you think of it?
