I guess Abe can control a pack of scrabs if he possess the ALPHA scrab, the leader of the group. then he uses scrbas gamespeak to say something like "screechhht"(translate: allya!!) and control them togheter.
In the movie, probably the ALPHA scrab set the alarm first, then all the other responded to it.
