I believe this is the scene referred to in one of the interviews where Munch has to lead the scrabs into the big cage so that he and Abe can get past.
Elum, although it's possible Abe can possess many creatures such as a scrab herd simultaneously, I very much doubt it. I don't see how you could control the individual actions of the whole herd, unless Abe can only possess them and have very limited control over them.
I think the scrabs were just resting, not possessed. As you can see, once Munch enters their herd they appear to all let out some kind of screech before they chase Munch. This could be some kind of alert. I don't see the point of an alert though if they all let out the screech at the same time, who would they be alerting?
I think this is just a delay the scrabs have before persuing Munch/Abe similar to in AO (not sure about AE) where scrabs sometimes don't chase for a short while after they've seen you. Sometimes they chase you immediately, other times they wait a while.
