If I understand you correctly then you are a little confused. The vykkers were originally a tree dwelling race with a love of two things. Cruelty and learning, the latter being an excuse for the former.
When they began selling goods to the glukkons and khanzumerz, they realized that their lower limbs made it difficult to walk on the smooth floors of buildings and factories made by other species. They needed to remove their feet in order to be able to walk in industrial buildings. They lose their main climbing limbs but it is a price they are willing to pay in order to keep their businesses going.
Their floating laboratories make it obvious that they still have a thing for being high though.
