RPGs like the FF series are not 'true' RPGs in my eyes. The reason I say this is because with games like FF your character and his/her personsa has already been created and you are limited as to what you can do outside the main storyline. You are pretty much stuck following the storyline (at least one the ones I've played).
A true RPG is one where you create the character yourself, personsa and all and the only limitation is what the game/dungeon master has set. Well in the old fashioned RPGs like AD&D...you can do other things then what the DM wants you to do...though the DM will most likely 'punish' you for it in some way short of just killing off your character...but that depends on your DM (he/she could be a total @$$hole about it...you never know).
