I can answer this one as it actually has something to do with my name.
Back in the day in Japan the butchers would sometimes cut off a finger and I'm not completely sure but it also may be considered a sign of low-class...anyhoo, whatever the reason in Japan it is taboo to depict characters with four fingers. Five are good, three are fine, but four is bad.
Thus when Oddworld was released in Japan on the PC, OWI had to slice one of Abe's fingers to conform.

Abe's Oddysee in Japan is called
Abe-A-GoGo. The romanji of the katakana would be
EIBu A GoU GoU and because of my connection to Japanese that is why I chose Eibu and my sig simply translates "Four Fingers are Bad". Also
Abe's Exoddus is called
Abe '99 in Japan.
