I agree more with Pacens ideas.
Maybe the rings were only a simple solution. Maybe they wanted Abe to glow in different colors but that would ask too much memory or graphical power or whatever. So they just used a glowing ring. Maybe this will change in Munch. (I never liked the rings anyway)
