Eureka! It says on Dear Alf that the visor type of masks in Abe's Oddysee only let them so straight in front of the, so they had to turn their head sideways or down to look at things besides straight in front of them. This caused many Sligs to walk into pits or meat grinders so they changed it to the other style. THATS why they did it. And yes we are kinda dumb but we can tell the difference between Abe and some other Mud! Slogs are the ones that can't but all Mudokons taste the same so they don't really care.
