The duck-billed platypus, ornthorhyncus anatinus, is the only species of platypus that is not extinct. It is also a monotreme which makes it one of the only three egg-laying mammals (the other two are the two different species of echidna, or spiny anteater). The platypus's bill is sensitive to the electric currents given off by living things and it is one of the few poisonous mammals, the males having spurs on their hind legs.
