I looked alchemy up in the dictionary and it said something like "any mysterious changing in the structure or appearance of things." In the case of the glukkons, I believe they wanted to change their hands to look like the pawprint on the moon. But their dabbling in genetic science went horribly wrong leaving us with what they look like today.
Perhaps this explains the mysterious missing pinky. The glukkons cut of the mudokons pinkies so that they didn't look like the moon crater. But then the moon mysteriously changed as well... Just a thought.
