I thought it was funny, too. But I think that anyone commanding a complete battle fleet might have a little chip on his or her shoulder about whether the fleet should divert or what is perceived as a single vessel should divert, regardless of nationality.
Something like this doesn't have to be presented as another tiresome "this is why the US/Americans suck" topics.
