I don't think any plots should center on walking around and smelling the roses and trying not to get eaten. Unless Lorne plans to do that in the Quintology, I am perfectly happy with the factories and such that our heros have been exploring. I do think that OWI should spend more time making the outdoor environments more alive. In AO and AE you always got the feel that there was something more, beyond the gameplay. In MO they do as good of a job as making the outdoors look like the dwelling place of many creatures. A goo analogy is that in Abe's games you don't feel like you're looking at a gamelevel, in MO you do. I want more creatures (especially ones like rats that don't do anything but hop around and look cool) and the removal of the use of "fog" and cliffs to isolate the levels. OWI can come up with more creative backgrounds than that!
