Basically, it has happened, is happening now but no nearly at the same level.
Remember, Satan's greatest weapon is proving he doesn't exsist. Why work physically when the "logic" takes so many smart people and with so much prowess and finess. If I were Satan, the last thing I would do is go "Hey, everybody,there is a suupernatural! But let's no quibble over the whole hell-agony in flames jazz. Lets go possess people and look like total evil jerks so even more people will turn to God!" Seems a little counter productive.
