It was mainly symbolic. After killing Mary's Demon, James relizes that he has been fooling himself the whole time, and accepts that
he killed Mary, not the disease. He has a vision of Mary, and she gives him the
rest of her letter. The letter is just telling James that he should move on with his life, no matter what happened in the past. The "resolution" was that James has a clear concience, and can stop lying to himself about Mary... at least that's how I took it...
