I think you are trying to say that because 2D side-scrolling adventure games have made a comeback of sorts, the concept of switching from 2D to 3D isn't necessary?
Depends if the limitations bother the developer or not, in the case with Lorne, his on record saying he needed the technological jump. We still see it today just a bit differently with the art direction and trying to reach the 'ILM" level he kept ref to.
I think given the current state of the gaming industry and indie games etc, the 'retro' appeal of side-scrolling adventure is a benefit, but once they have the budget I expect he will go straight to full 3D roaming one again.
