The Minecraft server ran for quite a while and actually started being hosted on someone's computer. The problem with that is that it relies on those host being online for others to play. As the server grew we got around that limitation by hosting the server on a dedicated platform which cost money each month. There were no viable alternatives at the time to support a server that sometimes had 15 people at once playing on a pretty big map. And yeah, eventually people moved on from Minecraft, that's just how these things go.

Personally I'd like to see a game server like that again, just not for Minecraft but for some other co-op building game (one of the many Minecraft clones, if you will). 7 Days to Die, Rust, Ark, stuff like that. I think many of the old guys have really left Minecraft behind them.
