My dad's side of the family are extremely religious. He went to a catholic school as a child, but when I was born my folks made a conscious decision not to push a religion on me and let me make my mind up as I grew up. Naturally I turned out an atheist. Neither of my parents are into religion now, and I don't really think they ever wanted to be.
I'm quite thankful I didn't grow up with religion in my life; you don't need religion to have a moral compass. I just live with the rule of not being a twat to people, but not through any fear or a hell, just because life's hard enough already. It also provides me with karma in a sense, not in a spiritual way, but when I do a good thing I feel good as a result, and you can't beat that feeling of knowing you helped someone out.
