This is most likely a honeypot to catch spambots signing up to the mailing list – pretty common practice, so unlikely to be significant.

It happened to me too. It's not a honeypot. It's either poorly coded Javascript stopping people from legitimately signing up for the mailing list, or it's a poorly thought out part of the ARG.
