I'm trying to understand how establishing how a species reproduces in an alien planet that's main appeal is it's a life-like alien planet would alienate the audience that's likely very interested in the intricacies of the planet and its inhabitants

It's not reproduction, it's how these species 'get off' so to speak.

Doesn't sound like he was talking about making babies, and we are already aware of the Queens and the breeding going on so he is talking about non-reproductive sex.

THAT aspect is firmly in "Don't ask, Don't tell' territory for me.
