Nuclear..hmm, nah they can be more inventive than that.
How about something like a race of cold weather animals who are forced into vats of slime and boiled to create the huge amount of gas needed to spin a *tiny* turbine leaving the creatures tortured and guey nasty poisonous slime... Now that's power!
and why would there be a need for mutated Oddworld creatures? Would *anyone* but us really notice, because they are already pretty freaky!
