Doom 3 multiplayer was a more traditional AFPS, coming between Quake 3 and Quake 4. New Doom has loadouts, which were universally hated in Quake Live by regulars, newbies and old players alike. I really don't know why they'd go down that route again, except for a simplified lolconsole game.
The slow pace of D3 probably came from the shitty MP maps - it looks really corridor based. Doom 4 will have exactly the same problems in map design because of how Snapmap works. It probably is a bit faster, because players get more off the spawn.
Also nobody really played Doom 3 MP from what I gather? It died off fairly fast at least. It did have some short lived competition - CPL picked it up in 2004 so guys like Fatal1ty played it, but it got dropped for Painkiller in 2005 which in turn got dropped for Quake 4 in 2006. I think it was the main 1v1 game at QuakeCon 2004 and 2005, again until Quake 4 came out. They all went back to Quake 3 in the end anyway, and then Quake Live which is mostly the same.
