Original AO PC release had ABEWIN.exe and ABEDOS.exe and could be ran on both OSes. You certainly can't run Steam AO from DOS.
They also came with special perfomance modes...
...which were just shortcuts with additional command line parameter to enable/disable interlines.
Also, a Windows 95 theme with animated Abe cursors, icons and hi resolution 640x480 RF wallpaper.
