Anyway. Obviously I wasn't born in the 80s, but what I've heard is that some older games were hard because they making most of limited tech. So in order to keep someone playing it as long as possible, they made them stupidly hard.
Also because they were often based on arcade games, which had to kill you off occassionally so that you'd keep plugging coins in the slot.

That's false, the bats were cheap as fuck because a lot of the sections they were in were buggy as shit.
I never felt that they were buggy. I just didn't like the fact that when they get near to Abe without touching him, he still reacts and tries to shoo them away. I spent ages trying to get past the swinging stones before I realised that he wasn't losing health when crouched down.
