Sligs skid from a run to a halt. You can bypass it by doing a tiny bit of walk before you stop, or much more convenient, shooting. Shoot while running and you'll come to an instant stop every time.
Sligs take a step back if you hold down shoot for long periods of time. Shoot in short bursts.
Making sure you've cleared Abe when you go past him is just something you have to judge until you get used to it. You can keep surprisingly close.
