I never said the 2nd and 3rd games were hard. I said that the enemies dealt lots of damage. It's also worth mentioning that they generally move faster, and attack more frequently than in RnC 1. After the first game you have more health, more mobility (with strafing) and more checkpoints. The enemies gradually get less and less reasonable as the games go on, until you're forced to buy armor to sponge the bullets that will inevitably hit you. It's artificial difficulty, and it does nothing except pad out the experience - much like the lack of checkpoints in the first game.

Strafing actually broke a lot of the balance from RnC1 in my opinion. You could still dodge reliably in the first game, you just had to crouch-flip or do that thing with the thruster pack. Both of those slow you down significantly. You couldn't dodge while rushing forwards and attacking like you can in the other games. I really think the added mobility was a big part of the super-powered enemies you get in the later games.
