I played Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix in Japanese, and found it incredibly disorienting despite knowing the base game so well. I knew exactly where to go and what to do all the time, but ability menus and items were daunting for the first 20 or 30 hours.

After 100+ hours I actually got really good at remembering distinguishing features of words, like the standard suffixes on crafting mats that indicated quality, and remembering sequences of abilities in menus based on how physically long the words were. Even after months of not playing it I can navigate all of the menus fairly confidently, and because my methods of learning everything were so complex I can recall most of what I actually learned.

Because Japanese is so distinct from English, there are lots of little tricks you can use to make it easier for you.
