JAW seem pretty keen on making anything interactive glow or have light. See: the new lights for the trap doors, electric fields, on levers. I think this extends into the natural levels, too (?) and without prior knowledge of the Elum Pull Ring I can imagine it would be hard to spot it in the new 3D environment with so much misc bits and pieces in the background.
In the original games it was obvious which elements could be interacted with because they either moved or clearly stood out for whatever reason - I think in 3D they have to fight the difficulty of interactive elements getting lost (hence glowing lights on pull ring)?

Having objects glow in natural levels doesn't make any sense, though. The obvious solution would be to have them stand out in some sort of artistic way. Probably more difficult than it sounds, though.
