Basically there's stuff that happened and stuff fans wanted to happen so much that Lucas sold the publishing rights so he could cash in.
If it involves Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Obi Wan Kenobi or Emperor Palpatine then it's likely (But certainly not exclusively) in the former.
If it involves Bobba Fett, Wedge Antilles or any Jedi or Sth not mentioned above then it's very likely in the latter.
