No, I'm not just watching for the gore, otherwise I'd just watch Fist of the North Star again. I started watching Higurashi for the psychological horror, but I am a little disappointed that there isn't as big of an emphasis on it as I first thought. Is there any anime with horror similar to Silent Hill or Audition that you recommend? Of all the ones I've watched, the horror is usually a side thing, and so far I've seen nothing that comes close to Silent Hill, in terms of storytelling or horror, and to be honest I don't think I ever will. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.
Madoka (Faust the anime), Hell Girl (Shinto Faust the anime), Shiki (Greek Tragedy with vampires the anime), Shigofumi and Welcome to the NHK have the psychological down pat, but are light on the horror. From the New World (Though you need to give it time). Texhnolyze and Boogiepop Phantom (These two have the visual medium equivelent of a high reading age). Another is definitely psychological horror and a lot of people liked it. I didn't, but then again I didn't like Elfen Lied much either.

If you dare to dabble in the world of visual novels, the Higurashi visual novel is much more psychological and in depth to start with, then by the same author there's also Umineko. Corpse Party has been available legally a few years and also has an anime adaptation which isn't bad but is by no means spectacular. Saya no Uta is the elephant in the room here (I can't be held responsible for the content or your reaction to it) and Tsukihime is an old classic for a reason.

Incidentally I'm of the opinion OANST is the only person actually complaining here and the rest are complaining about complaining. I recognize I lack perspective on the issue though, so I'm passing the buck on anime threads up to Nate. I think it's a bad idea though. I must have finished thirty shows in the last three months and I've only talked about a handful for a reason. Respect and moderation is good. Entitlement is bad.
