From a gameplay aspect I prefer AE, simply because of how big the game is and how many great things were added (Quicksave is a blessing). From a story standpoint, I prefer AO, the whole universe seemed more menacing, which let's be honest, it's exactly what Lorne Lanning wanted. As for an overall opinion, I don't prefer one over the other, I like them both the same.
Recently I've very slowly been getting my girlfriend into gaming (yeah life has changed a bit for me) Of course I couldn't pass up the chance to throw Oddworld in there so I decided to start her off with AO on the Playstation. Not only for her to understand what the whole universe was about, but also so she could experience Oddworld the exact same way I first did. It was hilarious watching somebody who is very inexperienced with gaming in general try and take on something like AO, she just barely managed to make it to the stockyards. Even though she said she was getting really pissed off with the game she was enjoying it.
