Oh yeah, Twin Peaks started out absolutely amazing but a lot of shit went down with season 2. A lot of executive meddling and such and basically the murderer was forced to be revealed earlier than planned. This was because viewers started to pretty much lose interest since the murder mystery had already been dragged on for a shitload of time, and then after all of that was wrapped up, the show was pretty much lost its direction. Or at least this is what I've discovered through researching the show.
And it also didn't help that David Lynch wasn't really involved that much afterwards because he was busy doing working on another movie at the time. The last episode has so many cliffhangers because it wasn't originally planned to be the final episode, there were plans for a third season, but the show was cancelled.
If you want you could also watch the movie, which is hated by a lot people (which is understandable). The movie isn't horrible. In some ways it's kind of a letdown, because of the fact that it doesn't really clear up any of the cliffhangers since it's a prequel revolving around Laura Palmer, and the beginning of the film has some continuity errors as well, and it generally opens up even more questions, but there are still some really good parts in it. It's also a lot more darker and morbid and disgusting.
