I was told only last Saturday that layered cakes are no longer just for weddings. The theory expressed was that it's easier to make multiple cakes and layer them in to one than to make one big cake (and classier than having multiple individual cakes). I just think it's because cake makers want to be able to charge more for birthday cakes.
