When it comes to sculpting the base is everything because if it isn't solid and recognizable the final result won't turn out very well.

It's plaster cloth. I found it to be useful to bulk up the armature and use less clay, but it also helps dry the clay faster which proves to be a problem as most of the clay I use I discovered is prone to cracking. Right now I'm trying to figure out a way to make the clay work with the dried plaster without it cracking as severely as it does, or at least trying to find a way to nicely fill in the cracks because despite the ridiculous amount of cracking the clay holds firmly in place.
