I usually dislike instant death mechanics, but Jade Cocoon 2 got it right. The highest % chance of death spell could only target one monster. The next tier up targeted your entire active side, but had a much lower percent than the other spells.
The strongest beastmaster in the game uses it lots, so to take him down you need to plan around potentially having a large chunk of your beasts wiped out at once. Lots of slowing spells and recovery water magic.
I really need to find time to play that game again.
